when a game is finished, Nintendo don't immediately put that development team in to full swing for the next game in the same franchise. they may have a handfull start the concepts but full development doesnt start until a couple years before intended release. do you honestly think that 1080 and F-Zero Wii have been in development for 7-8 years?
Nintendo have to release their titles at sensible intervals. firstly it would be bad for third-parties if they have to compete with popular Nintendo franchises all the time. second, Nintendo aren't going to risk the popularity of their long running franchises by releasing them every second year.
the only times it made sense was with the Metroid Prime series, where the stories connected.
Prime -> Echoes = 2yrs
Echoes -> Corruption = 3yrs
and likely the only reason Corruption was 3yrs because they had moved it to Wii for showing the console's FPS potential.
Nintendo don't take longer to make games. they just don't come back to their franchises straight away.
instead of looking how long it is between titles of certain franchises, you should look at how long it is between titles of Nintendo development teams. but even then it may not indicate length of development as releases may have been pushed back to a suitable date instead of being released as soon as completed.
