Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why does Nintendo take that long to make games compared to HD consoles?

because they like making money?

The answer to threads question is very easy. It's much easier to create games with great graphics and decent gameplayer than games with good gameplay and good artstyle.

Take WoW for example. There are loads of games that look 10 times better but when you actually start to play them you realize that they lack something, that even if the graphics looks amazing they lack the personalization, they look cold.

Take my work as a web programmer for example. Few days ago I've got appreciated for implementing a shitty chart system that looks good and it only took me a few hours. I've got no appreciation whatsoever for the dozens of hours I've spent developing some very smart tools which didn't had any shiny graphics.

Take women for example. You would never marry the pretiest girl in the highschool but you would sure bone her 2-3 times.

It's that easy. A+ games that you dream at takes more than 3 years to be created. The games you give 10/10 scores but only gets 5/10 if you lower the graphics aren't A+ at all.

Well it is simply because Nintendo are too busy making casual games are rightly so, I dont see Zelda selling 20M like Nintendogs

Look at it this way.

1. Nintendo develops for both Wii and DS, most of those other companies develop for only Ps360 + PC, and makes 1 game for all those.

2. Nintendo has less than 4000 employees. Around 3750. Electronic Arts alone has twice of that. Combined for all the games you listed, the emloyee total is at least 15.000. Nintendo also makes hardware, most of the other companies don't. So overall, the others have at least 5 times as many employees working on games.

3. Nintendo has a buttload of franchises. They make 1 of most of their games pr console. Compare that to other developers, who make as many games, but in the same franchise. That messess up your comparison.

So, let me see. On the Wii side you have ONE company. One the HD side you have Sony, Microsoft, Monolith, Bizarre, Ubisoft, 2K Games, Harmonix, Crytek, Mistwalker, Criterion Games and Infinity Ward. That's ELEVEN companies.

I'd just like you to think whether ELEVEN to ONE is a fair comparison.

Nintendo is doing rather well to have equalled the output of 6+ "HD" developers in terms of games.

I think in my opinion the reason is Nintendo games have legs, they arent bought and immediately traded in, the games become instant classics of the nintendo variety. When nintendo releases a game it knows it will sell for a good while so theres no financial need to rush games out, it will only cut into sales of there current good leggy game. but thats imo.

Unfortunately it means I have been waiting and waiting for New Super Mario Bros 2 with no sign whatsoever of its appearance.  Will people stop buying New Super Mario Bros already!!!

Doesn't really matter to me... their games never really change much....

4 ≈ One

Cause nitnendo is all about perfection they will start the whole developement proccess over again (looks over at LOZ OOT) SMG doesnt have any bugs from what i seen and played its at a solid 60fps with polished graphics.

If one thing, I hope that Mario/Zelda games have a shorter gap between subsequent episodes. Just look at the following gaps!

SMW -> Mario 64, 6 years
Mario 64 -> SMS, 6 years
SMS -> SMG, 5 years

Even the Olympic games and the World Cup (sporting events which I consider horribly long waits) occur more frequently than Mario games! If Nintendo could release Mario games as frequently as they made the first Super Mario Bros. series, then I'll be happy.

Maybe because there target isnt making amazing hardcore games? Why do you think they have released/announced tons of "casual" like games?

Sigh... may I ask how you came to this conclusion? Do you think the Zelda team did Wii Sports? The question wasn't why they don't release more core games, it's why they take so long making them.

The reason is simple - they won't release their games until they're absolutely satisfied with it. See: Ocarina of Time, SSBB, Twilight Princess.

Like Squilliam mentioned, some developers merely take their time perfecting their games. Blizzard, Nintendo, and Team Ico all fit in this catagory, and they happen to be some of my favorite developers.
