Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why does Nintendo take that long to make games compared to HD consoles?

Frankly, I prefer Nintendo's method. Annual (or sometimes even biennial) sequels are often too soon for me, and I find they tend to be more iterative and less creative.

This thread is somwhat old though I'll reply anyway. Nintendo takes long becasue their game are usually much diffrent than the last. Those that don't take long are usually better than the last as they make a improved versions and perfect it i.e Phatom Hourgalss and sprirt tracks

Well to be fair, for the most part Insomniac = quality = one year.  It's possible to be quick and good.  Who knows.

I think your timing is wrong...nintendo don't necessarily take THAT long to make games...they just may not have started working on them straight away...

for instance, I doubt that they have actually spent the last 4 years or so working on a new STARFOX game (esp since nintendo themselves have said they are uncertain if they'll ever actually make a new one, which implies they haven't started one yet!)...if they did start to make a new sf game (lets just pretend) tomorrow and it took 2 years to complete, YOU would probably say it took 6...when it actually took 2!!!!

Miyamoto only expressed interest in developing a new Pikmin game at E3 2008, which again implies it wasn't started until mid 2008 (or even much later), which means if it comes out sometime this year it will have taken around 2 years (give or take)...not the 5 or 6 you claim!

Nintendo don't take THAT long (with the exception of Zelda of course, and I'm sure that will be something worth the wait!)

Those other new IP's aren't being developed by Nintendo, and none of them are planned for a US release. Not even S&P2 or Punch Out are being made by Nintendo.

No Second Parties? Then... Gears of War, Motorstorm, Killzone 2, Halo 3, Uncharted 2, Resistance etc aren't developed by Sony/Microsoft. Now my question for you is: Why does Microsoft and Sony take that long to make games?

Same here.

I am not sure if the OP is trying to say that Nintendo takes too long to develop or if they take too long to release sequels.

The more I look at it, the more I think it is the latter. And is that so bad -- that Nintendo does not over-use its key franchises?

(Personally, I would like to see a chart showing the time lag between announcement and release -- like Capcom's four years for RE5 or long periods for various Final Fantasy games).

Ramping up game production doesn't really make sense for Nintendo unless they are guaranteed success in future generations , Nintendo is a conservative company and won't take huge risks for the sake of bigger long term profits ala Blu Ray PS3 , Sony aqquired the most development resources during the PS1 & PS2 era but now they've had to cut back production in some places and divert resources to more casual projects , sold off assets etc.

People don't seem to understand that Nintendo can't guarantee they'll win Next gen and even if they make a killing next next the generation , generations after will be entirely new ball games!. The gaming markets rapidly change every 8 or so years and staying ahead in such a dynamic industry is near enough impossible . The PS1 and PS2 did little for the PS3 just as the DS & Wii may not do much for future Nintendo consoles , no one forsaw the PS3's faliures but are generaly more open minded now with the Wii's is succesful.

Um.. i'm pretty sure breaking away from the new-console formula (ie. increasing graphics -- not completely change how games are controlled) was fairly risky.. although, unlike bluray.. it paid off for them extremely quickly, rather than cause them to suffer loss with every unit sold

Actualy the Wii was less of a risk than the GC2 , they had nothing to loose but everything to gain with an innovative approach , cheaper hardware and a new demographic.

funny, doubt u couldve said that 4 years ago

While Resistance is by Insomniac and thus a second party game, Uncharted 2 and Motorstorm are made by Sony owned groups and hence are first party. Just wanted to point that out.  I believe you're correct with Halo, but Epic isn't really a second party as they do develop for Sony too, just not for Gears...

You fail. You hardly fail with that.

Insomniac is making one or two games per year. Nintendo made this year about 4 games.

I really don't care about how long Nintendo take their time to develop. They're making quality games for all publics of all genres and it's a real good thing they don't give us a same 3D Mario game each year. You just enjoy more a game when you have waited for it so long. Zelda Wii and Twilight Princess = 5 years between. I will enjoy Zelda Wii 1000x more.
