Forums - Nintendo - IGN: Shaun White: PS3/360 vs. Wii

Overall Winner: PS3/360

Road Trip offers up a fun experience that – aside from the balance board control – doesn't do anything all that new or interesting. It's solid, and young kids will love it, but if you're looking for a fully featured snowboarding game with depth and longevity – the PS3 or 360 is the way to go.

I tend to agree on the balance board thing. It will be fun to try it out but I don't how long my legs will resist to play and I also don't know how exact I can play it using my balance board.

Considering the balance board will get many people who have never purchased a 'boarding' game before to pick up Shawn White (or Skate It) everything in it will be new and interesting to them. As long as it's solid it should do quite well.

But for fans of such games, maybe rent Wii version and buy HD version.

From my perspective (not ever playing a boarding game.)

Set runs (most locked) vs. open mountains. (PS3/360)
Balance board controls that work or regular controls that work better. (Tie)
Cartoony visuals that look good vs. HD graphics with frame-rate issues. (Wii)
A new control scheme vs. being able to ride ski lifts (?!) (Wii)
Split-screen vs. online. (Wii)

Just read through the whole article. They say Road Trip is better for kids but it's also better for me. While the whole idea of a mountain being an online social session is kinda cool, I don't have time for that.

I, and I think a lot of other older gamers, just want to feel like we're boarding for a few minutes (5-30) and then go on with our lives. The HD versions try to be like your really snowboarding, and I mean like an actual stay on the mountain as opposed to just the snowboarding. Hell, if I want that I'll goto ski resort for real. Just give me a quick fun experience without being a timesink or requiring me to learn complex controls.

I suppose I am getting pretty old for a gamer... This is basically the way I feel. I may actually get this game based on this preview.

For me, articles like this is what is killing gaming for me.

IGN prefers flawed realistic graphics to smooth cartoony graphics.

IGN thinks online gaming is MUCH better than splitscreen multiplayer. According to IGN, it's even no contest.

I can't express how much I disagree with both these beliefs. I'd hate to spend my gaming time playing semi-realistic games with twitchy framerates and no real multiplayer but appearantly, that's the direction the gaming industry needs to go.

Sounds like the Wii version is the best, although they tried very hard to cover that up, lol.

1. I want my snowboardgames to be arcade style, I'm not looking forward to having social sessions on an immense open area. The whole "platformer on a mountain with a snowboard in your hand" doesn't really sound like what I want in a snowboard game.
2. I really like the graphics, they're very polished, yet have a distinctive style.
3. Balance Board controls should make this a totally new experience.

It's sad that the big sites can't get over their dislike for Wii games. They mention all kinds of issues with the PS360 version, yet it wins all categories (ok a tie in graphics, which means the Wii graphics must be REALLY good).

This is why people need to read reviews. As much as people hype or downplay numbers, reviews still have value-- in the actual text. Sometimes what the reviewer sees as a negative may be a non-issue for you or even be a positive. These are actually games that I am most confident about liking. If a reviewer doesn't like a game and only points out things I like as reasons why, it is better than a reviewer gushing over the awesomeness of said game.

@Lapsed_gamer: I agree reading definitely provides you with a better veiwpoint

@Benga_Benga: I agree to an extent that most reviewers need to shake their contempt for Wii's concept, but it's not whats written in this piece that bothers me, but the fact the staffer wanted to compare COMPLETELY different games/genres, to show a difference in the Wii.

PS3/X360 Shaun White is a sim. Shaun White: Road Trip Wii is arcade style.

...I mean seriously you'd expect open worlds in a sim versus an arcade style game. Not to discredit the article but this was an unnessary one.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

If using the balance board is anything like the real thing then of course it's going to be harder to control than moving your thumb. I wonder if they had a preset notion about this game like they seemed to have about Wii Music.
