Forums - Sales - So exactly what kind of games does the ps3 sell best?

oh boy another one saying LBP failed lmao, if you act like you know so much why don't you realize those sales LBP has were leaked sales.

"failure" is a subjective word. For the devs, it probably means failure to bring profit. For me, it means failure to meet my expectations.

those are week 0 sales, so please dont try a console war once again, and dude fu^k ur expectations, it's how the community recieves the game, and everyone said it's a very good game.

Should we really pinpoint a particular genre (or 'kind' as you put it)?

While Halo and Gears are shooters, maybe it was just coincidence. Blame it on people who just labeled the 360 as 'only' an FPS machine.

Most Mario games sell well as long as Mario is in there-- but they transcend genres. Mario Galaxy is platformer, SSBB is a fighting game, Mario Kart is a racer, and, heck, Mario and Sonic is an olympic sports game.

Maybe the PS3 lacks a mascot. Master Chief is basically the 360's mascot. Mario is the Wii's main man. The PS3 doesn't have one yet (no, it's not Kratos).

Some people would probably point Sackboy, but by himself he doesn't have a personality-- mainly because LBP is oriented towards creating user content (hence, you make Sackboy into anyone or anything you think of).

P.S. Maybe, just maybe, if LBP is as huge as everyone hopes it to be, then maybe the PS3 can become the king of user created content type of games (if there is a genre of that sort). The mandatory harddrive can help achieve that.

Whose expectations? your's? cause that's the subjective part. LBP sales have already exceeded my expectations, and on the fast root to shattering them.

I don't know what your expectations were but I bought into the hype and considering it was a game supposed to appeal to all, I thought it would do mgs4 numbers considering mgs itself was considered ver hardcore with its 30 min movies.

Saying that the Ps3 will sell a racer well is odd. Racers have sold well on all consoles. If you look at it, we're likely to see something ala

Ps3 best selling racer: 8-10M (GT5 has alot of promise but we have to wait for the numbers)

X360 best selling racer: 5-6M (360 doesn't have a racer that has sold this much)

Wii best selling racer: 15M +?

So that isn't something that the Ps3 is likely to do extraordinary.

But I wouldn't say the 360 is extraordinary in anything either. Look at the top 10 titles for both consoles.

Ps3 has 2 sandbox - Assassin's Creed and GTA IV (Both Multiplat and the 360 outsold by over a million on both)

2 racers, GT5:P and Motorstorm

2 online FPS - Resistance and Call of Duty 4 (COD4 was outsold on the 360 by nearly twice what the PS3 version sold, Resistance will never sell over 4 million.)

2 3rd person shooter - MGS 4 and Uncharted

1 music game - Guitar Hero

1 Sports Game - Pro Evo 08

1 Platformer in LBP which will sell pretty well, just not amazing.

And X360

2 online FPS - Halo 3 and CoD 4

2 sandbox games  - AC and GTA IV (And Saints Row 1 & 2)

1 Racer - Forza 2

1 sports game - Madden 08

1 - 3rd person shooter - Gears (And gears 2 selling over 2 M in one day)

1 Music game  - Guitar Hero 3

1 Role-Playing game - Oblivion (And Fable 2, Mass Effect)

1 other game - Marvel Alliance

I would actually say that the X360's top sellers are more diverse than for the Ps3, or that it's at least a tie.

I'd say the 360 is more diverse. The PS3 will come into their own, but by then the 360 will have games all over the wall at your local Gamestop, just like the PS2 did.

GTA IV will eventually sell over six million copies just look at the sales numbers of the three GTA games on the PS2 there are all in the top five. Also I'm %100 percent sure that Gran Turismo 5 will sell over six million copies and if FFXIII turns out to be a great game it has a change to sell over six million also.

OP, shut the hell up. Why do you care so much? OMG, Sony doesn't have a game that sells 6 million+ copies. They're DOOMED.

Yeah right. Many games have sold well on PS3 (maybe not in your little world, though). It's not like higher sales means a better game, so what's the big deal? I'm enjoying the hell out of Resistance 2, and I don't have an urge to go buy a 360 for Gears or Halo.

Stop your crying. Sometimes I just have to step in when I see annoying threads like this.

After the failure of LBP to meet my sales expectations (even though I haven't bought it either), some thoughts came to mind:

1. The wii would always sell a game from nintendo EXTREMELY WELL

2. The 360 would always pay homage to a good shooter or extremely westernized title. (Note that this is not a statement bashing the 360 as a "shooter console" as many xbox fanboys have a sore spot on that issue. It's not the case anymore really. It's just an observation of mine that even mediocre shooters like BIAHH manage to cover their dev costs many thanks to the x360).

3. But the ps3? I honestly have no idea. It seems sony is also confused on the kind of game that would eclipse the interest of most ps3 gamers and they haven't really found it yet and I think the problem is that the PS brand has always been somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades where all kinds of games did relatively well due to the HIGH install bases of the past but now that this luxury is gone, it means that all genres just sell relatively lower on the ps3 than it's predecessor and none really stands out. This is going to be a real problem for sony as no single game is going to do ridiculous numbers  due to the highly varied nature of the PS fanbase.

Even with a relatively smaller install base last gen, Halo 2 was able to clock 8 mil (which isn't too far from the best selling ps2 games) due to the xbox brands penchant for selling shooters. PS has never really  had a defining genre or mascot or anything of the like so I'll patiently wait to see which ps3 game can finally break through the 6 mil mark. Your thoughts?

To answer your question you need to look no further than the sales of FIFA and Pro Evolution games.  In other words PS3 would always have higher sales for football games.

I'm not too worried about gamestop. Thier bias towards the 360 over there is just ridiculous. When I purchased my ps3 from them, the clerk basically said it was a piece of junk and tried to convince me to buy a 360 instead. My local gamestop never even stocked the ps3 version of condemned 2 anytime during week 1. I had to buy it from KMart. Yes, KMart. Perhaps gamestop's attitude also has something to do with the software sales trends.
I don't think the 360 is necessarily more diverse than the ps3. Ps3 is severly lacking in representing many genres the ps2 had. Most games doing well on the 360 would have done very well on the xbox as well: mainly shooters, sandbox and western RPG/weird games. All the western RPGs last gen came to xbox. It's obvious which sytem the WRPG fans purchased. Racers have always been a hit or miss on any console.

So you joined vgchartz just to insult me? Perhaps you should have kept your sentiment to yourself instead of posting vile gibberish.

OMG sony isn't selling software so my tears are flooding my computer keyboard....not.

Keep this up and hopefully the mods would spare us your insolence!
