Should we really pinpoint a particular genre (or 'kind' as you put it)?
While Halo and Gears are shooters, maybe it was just coincidence. Blame it on people who just labeled the 360 as 'only' an FPS machine.
Most Mario games sell well as long as Mario is in there-- but they transcend genres. Mario Galaxy is platformer, SSBB is a fighting game, Mario Kart is a racer, and, heck, Mario and Sonic is an olympic sports game.
Maybe the PS3 lacks a mascot. Master Chief is basically the 360's mascot. Mario is the Wii's main man. The PS3 doesn't have one yet (no, it's not Kratos).
Some people would probably point Sackboy, but by himself he doesn't have a personality-- mainly because LBP is oriented towards creating user content (hence, you make Sackboy into anyone or anything you think of).
P.S. Maybe, just maybe, if LBP is as huge as everyone hopes it to be, then maybe the PS3 can become the king of user created content type of games (if there is a genre of that sort). The mandatory harddrive can help achieve that.
