Forums - Sales - Microsoft say that PS3 will be $399 by christmas

That would be so cool if they do that..but currently im now investing into a Xbox 360...but bringing the price to $400 dollars is way good beyond good its excellent..I can see an increase in sales dramatically...but nothing special considering Microsoft is dominating the $400 price range now...

Doubt it theres no way they would use a 40GB hd, its just pointless. Their hd space will only go up with every new sku.

You know, I sorta doubt this will happen. Especially by Christmas. Perhaps if sales continue to crawl, even through holidays, then we might see a re-vamped version.

Thing is, even if it does prove true, it will only make me more happy with my version.

It would be a real bummer to lose the backwards compatibility and WiFi for me especially.

If this trend continues though, before long we will just see the "consoles" with their own design and spec building pages like we do with computers now. xD

The 20GB PS3 already proved a "core" PS3 to be quite a sales failure.

The cost savings and sales are to small to warrant such a SKu.

People were looking at the 20gb model as the low memory one, 40gb is more like it,and it will likely have backwords compatibility without the EE, most people dont even know the ps3 has embeded wifi(casual and even some Hardcore).I doubt they will take the slots out. Basicly if its the same 20gb with a 40gb hardrive for $399.99 basicly it wil sell better than the 20gb,

more memory than 20gig

cheaper than 20gig by 100 buks

Also, if it were to have all the features as the 60/80gig model then it will sell very well. Al I want is sony to release a ps3 at $399.99 that will at the least double sales in the area that ps3 is realesed be it 40gigs or 80 or 20gigs.

I had a thread on this first, but you stole it :(

Anyway,

I think it's a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' thing. If they were to release a $400 SKU, people would bash it because it's not having those extra features, but then complain about the $500-600 price because of all those extra features. Personally, I think that would be really interesting if they did do a $400 version like that because I think it would attract lots of sales.

Compare a $350 premium 360 (with the rumored price drop) and a $400 PS3. I think that would defiantly put the 360's popularity to the test and help to begin to sway the vast amount of the millions of last-gen PS2 owners (and others as well) that are currently on the fence.

I don't see Sony introducing a 'core' unit.

I do see Sony dropping the 80G model to $499 by holiday.

If this is what MS thinks Sony will do then they are probably planning on dropping the 360 prices as well.

i don't see any possible way the 80gb sku could NOT be $499 by this holiday, you do realise this would be viewed as a price hike by the public, right? also a 40gb model should not be compared to the gimp 360 core. still not likely though.

This is funny. It's basically Microsoft saying "watch out for a 360 price drop".

Well excuse me but no more backward compatibility, which is 98% the reason for me to buy the PS3 and believe it or not, but am "slightly" considering it. Plus all the other options missing, 399USD is then cheap? LOL, yeah right... 100USD less and half of the features missing.

They should bring back the 20gb model just to say they have a version at $400/$300 this holiday season.

And any consideration of removing backward compatibility would be one of the biggest slaps to the face of the consumer I could imagine. I wouldn't put it past them though.
