Forums - Sony - Sony's financial report is up

No surprise, the 10% increase in yen cost them a tonn.
I'm guessing without it they would have been close to breaking even...

America is about 40% (for the Ps3) of Sony's sales right now... to find out what they'd be at wouldn't you times the revenue by .4 then times the number you get by .1 for the exchange rate?

2.6 bil in revenue = about 1 bil revenue for US times that by the 10% difference the dollar has been and you only get 100mil... wouldn't they have lost 280mil even if the dollar wasn't week?

10 million PS3 in forecast looks like they are calculating very conservative since in the first 2 quarters they already shipped about 4 million and if they can keep up with last years holiday sales thats another 4 million in this quarter so only 2 million left for the 4th quarter (which would actually be a bit lower sales than last year).
and ps2 shipped and sales seem to be still much stronger than everyone estimated here (tracking about same as ps3 still), guess its selling more in countries that aren't tracked that good on this page now.

last year they had some kind of insane forecast that was impossible for them to reach, so obviously this is much better.  Obviously it's gonna sell more than 10 million, but that would have been something like a worst case scenario.

==> they have done this in purpose to be able to say : we are selling PS3 much better than expected

(the opposite of last year)

Hmm, manufacturing projections are shareholder information that needs to be as accurate as possible. It's of no use for them to completely underestimate that number and then come out in April with 5 million more. It will raise questions as to why the management didn't see it coming.  Although they will surely beat their 10m forecast, I don't think it will be by much, based on their conservatism.

Overall Sony's results are meh, definitely improvement but still a worrying loss. Every quarter with a loss makes the recources for R&D and games decrease.

Well, at least losses were slashed by a lot.

lol.

i am VERY confused...how is a surging -- high yen bad for SONY??

I just don't understand....

If the Yen is high, then the games and consoles we buy in US Dollars and Euros are worth LESS relative to the Yen.

Sony is based in Japan, so a high Yen means that the Euro's and Dollars they earn by selling stuff outside of Japan are worth less in Yen atm, which means income is down.

@spankey, starcraft & Benga BEnga

ok got it...thanks

So the conversion rate won't be great.....but in this case I guess Microsoft should be doing well due to a high yen...

Well, only if they sell alot in Japan, which as far as 360 goes is not really the case.

The real profits in currency differences has been the European market for tha last year. All three hardware manufacturers have earned hard Euro's that are worth relatively much in their respective homecountries.

The Euro has dropped a lot lately, so that party is over.

ok.....so no wonder SONY didn't get a profit....considering PS3 does well in EU

If the Euro isn't powerful it won't help....

Ofcourse things will have to go up currency wise some time next year.
