Forums - Sales - LucasArts President Jim Ward on Nintendo's third-party relationships

Man Lucas Arts knows a light saber game for the Wii would sell through the roof. I don't know but I suspect they had some kind of rift with Nintendo sometime after Rogue Squadron 3, and that lead to their games going to the PS2 and X-Box and not the GameCube, even though Star Wars games have always sold well on Nintendo systems. Really Nintendo may have some to blame, but if Lucas Arts isn't at least in the planning stages for a light saber game, than maybe as a video game company they're on the downward slide.

Kind of like Factor 5...which I've lost some respect for. It's fine that they think the Wii is underpowered...but they act like they can't make a good game on a console like the Wii. Part of me wonders if Factor 5 was always out to just make the best looking game...since their game models haven't changed much since the first Rogue Squadron. Rogue Squadron 2 was great, but Rogue Squadron 3 sucked...even if it looked AMAZING. That's why I'm worried about Lair...though it seems to be getting plenty of work.

So becasue they got high standards for their products you lost respect for them.

I don't think the relevant part here is that LucasArts wasn't initially on board; that's clear. My concern is that Nintendo still hasn't opened up to third parties to include them more, because it's necessary in order to maintain solid third party support.

Obviously, third parties have to get on board right now, because of the Wii's amazing sales. But what happens next generation, or even later this gen when an opening for a competitor arrives? What happens if third parties are no longer forced to work with Nintendo by sheer economic necessity? That's my concern, long term.

I've heard reports that Nintendo has opened up, and some that they have not done so.

Rogue Squadren III is still one of the prettiest games on any console yet it plays like a carbon copy of Rogue Squadren II which played like a clone copy of Rogue Squadren for the N64 ...

The fact that Factor 5 seemed incapable of producing new and interesting gameplay is why Ben lost respect for them

Nintendo showed the remote on TGS2005 and nobody believed in them. They had megaphones and LucasArts did not listen because they didn't want to. Who listened? Sony surely did and showed some concern already at E3-2006 with the sixaxis.

Then came E3-2006 and LucasArts still did not listen. It took the system to launch and the sales for it to actually listen.

Nintendo has never been the most open company about their business. But most third-party developers just didn't want to listen and they were at their own fault for not having any games on the wii. They should have at least have had a small team working on a Wii game just in case it would come out as it did. Just the possibility of this happening should be enough for them to pay some attention.

I think it is a little of both here personally. Nintendo is obviously secretive and it is pretty obvious that their was some doubt about its performance early on the part of Luca Arts. But I don't think we have enough info to make any meaningful determinations. For my part at least I am going to reserve judgment.

At the end of the day, as far as I am concerned I don't care how it goes down, so long as it results in some kick-ass lightsaber duels.

And by all claims Lair is once again a clone of the formula they have used since the N64 with a new coat of paint.  Yeah, I completely agree with Ben about losing respect for Factor5.

Personally for me the concern isn't really that Nintendo isn't communicating well with developers (we already knew that), but the statement that "once we figured out what it was we immediately began development."  I'm not sure developers really understand that the Wii is not filled with nothing but casual "market expansion" gamers, and they are going to have to learn this the hard way.

Yeah, agreed. Though Nintendo is certainly to somewhat blame for third party relationships (not buying them out with money?), it is also the third party's own fault for not acknowledging the Wii.

Companies like Ubisoft believed in the Wii from the start and made money. Companies who didn't make games, didn't make money. LucasArts is just very sour, because they couldn't make money.

I really wish Factor 5 would step outside their current comfort zone and finish Thornado. I think Lair will be fine but derivative when it comes to its aerial gameplay. That is fine though but I like how Factor 5 handled flight combat in the Rogue Squadron series. Its the ground combat that worries me. The ground combat ruined Rogue Squadron 3.

Exactly...the ground combat in Lair doesn't look like much to write home about either.

And just like in Rogue Squadron, you spend a majority in the air...but those few missions on the ground really ruin the experience. Hopefully they know that and made the ground combat in Lair better. I don't want to be knocking around and flaming a bunch of faceless soldiers with slow motion deaths every other kill...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
