Forums - Gaming - Anyone into the modding and import scene?

Hey mates, I’m just curious if any of you are into the modding and import scene with consoles?

I myself have never been heavy into it, but I do have a modded Dreamcast that allows me to play import games without a boot disc. I’m also thinking about picking up a Saturn soon that will allow me to do the same as well.

I’ve never been one with enough testicular fortitude to mod a brand new system and void the warranties, especially with the terrible hardware qualities in consoles as of late ( PS2 and 360 come to mind especially.)

Actually the PS3 interested me a lot as it is region free to begin with, thus some of the rare Japanese gems that are bound to only hit over in the Orient will prove ultra easy to play now. I feel this is one function that is overlooked by many, but then again the modding and import scene isn’t always the most robust to begin with.

I'm not...my friend tried to mod his Wii, but he crossed a wire or something...which meant the mod chip wouldn't work...the Wii works fine though...he's trying to sell the Wii for a bit under retail so he can get another Wii to mod...

I'm not into console mods, at least not with current ones...I've discussed to death before, but I feel out of movies, music, and games, the game industry needs the money per game the most...a game that sells well or only mediocre is the difference between a sequel or not, or a developer continuing or not. With music...it really doesn't cost much to put your face in a microphone...so even if your record label isn't big, you can still get your music out there if it's good enough. And movies, money is important, but after DVD sales, the movie companies get plenty of money...pirating isn't going to kill them.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I had a modded PS2 last gen, but something kept happening to it (wouldn't read backups), so I eventually sold it to a friend a few years ago. Then, just earlier this year, I picked up another PS2.

My brother is considering modding his 360 DVD Drive firmware so he can run backups, but if he does, he'll get another one that won't get banned from Xbox Live.

If the PS3 Firmware ever gets hacked, I'd be on it just like my PSP. The Custom Firmware for PSP is superbulosous.

Import yes, modding NO!! I just simply buy the original import consoles, no things that aren't suppose to be in the console will come any near it.

And I'm surprised it may even be discussed here, modding is illegal and against every developers wish, at other websites these things are being banned.

I know a friend of mine that has a modded ps2 that plays 360 games, as well as ps1/ps2 games.

My former roommate had a modded xbox. People keep telling me to mod my Wii, but since I'll be in Japan studying soon, I may just try to pick a Japanese one up as well. Then not only do I get to play the Japanese Wii games, but also the VC games.

Well don't get me wrong here Wiigirl, I'm not in support of pirating. That's in a different category all together.

Personally, I've always used mods to allow me to have one console that plays all regions, thus allows for less expensive importing: Cutting out the need for another console and adapters.

But to be honest, modding a console isn't illegal. What one does with it, is another story.
