Games are 'the most important thing' for PS3

Kaz Hirai says it's important Sony does not allow Nintendo to 'run off alone'.

Speaking to NBonline (translated by Kotaku), Sony Computer Entertainment head Kaz Hirai has stressed how important games are in the future of the PlayStation 3 - not so much that it's a Blu-ray player and other such non-gaming functionality.

"The thing that I did when I took over last year was to boast the appeal of games themselves... The main premise of the PS3 is video games. That's the absolutely most important thing that we cannot lose sight of," said Hirai.

The SCE CEO also expressed concern at the current market domination enjoyed by Nintendo, noting the platform holder "cannot allow Nintendo run off alone".

good to hear it, the 2008 lineup looks very good and will only get better in 2009

my picks that i will deffo buy

  • resistance 2
  • little big planet
  • socom confrontation
  • motorstorm 2
  • valkyere chronicles

plus plethora of multi plats make fall of 2008 very very good indeed.

They better be concerned. Hirai is lying too, because the first thing that Sony was concerned about was getting Blu Ray out into the mass market at an affordable price. The games came second. Two step process...not the other way around.

As a fan of Sony I would like to see them sell more consoles by lowering prices. However I recognize that it's a business and as such Sony has to take decisions which takes into consideration their profit margins. And as some people have pointed out already we are now entering the holiday season so they will sell a good amount of consoles regardless. The best thing to do for the health of the company is to stay the course until next year and when the time comes deliver a $100 price cut.

I have to disagree with Kaz on this. PS3 is not just about games, games, games. Games is just one of many features that makes the PS3 not only the best value ever in the history of this market, but also makes it the single greatest home entertainment box created to date. Sony never was going to let Nintendo run away with the market, and they never will. This year they got the PS3's public image were it needs to be after the rediculous hate last year made the system a product to avoid for many consumers.

The rest of this year Sony is first and formost working on profit. They know that a price cut means very little to effect sales at this point in the year, and all it really does is create greater losses. Next year PS3 will finally be at full stride, and things are going to start to change in the industry, and the world of electronics. Prices for Blu-ray will plumit next year as the format breaks into the mainstream. This along with the other price reducing advancments will finally allow Sony to come down to the $299 price point people are so desperate for.

Sony took this market from Nintendo, and they never intended to give it back. No one ever wants to give it up, but once it happens there are two choices. One is sit back get pissed and steady the same course, or two accept that you need to change and do what it takes to prove you are still the best. Nintendo took the first option after the N64 lost to PS1, so far Sony has taken the later, and they now moving beyond what they need to do to regain their thrown.

So you believe the PS3 will outsell the Wii?

Sony wasn't really worried about profit margins. It was the after effect of the launch that got them really worried. They knew it would be bumpy. Obviously they had an asking price of $599 for a machine that was truthfully worth by parts about $1000+. They knew they were going to lose money from the get go to break in the product, so they could start a see saw effect with the Blu Ray DVD player market. Once they got HD-DVD out of the way Sony finally started to focus on the games. By the time Sony focused on their system instead of Blu Ray, they were already over 2 billion in losses.

They have incurred substantial losses thus far so it will be very interesting to see how they do this quarter. After all they managed to have a small profit last quarter.
