There are only two highly recognizeable gaming characters that go so far beyond gaming that they get recognized by people that have baely played a game in their lives. Mario and Pacman. Everything else is small potatoes. I would say the next recognizable would be a Tetris puzzle.

You stole the words right out my mouth. I will add one character that I'm surprised that not one person mentioned yet (unless I missed it) that every gamer will know and even most non gamers as well. And could even be argued would be more recognized than even Mario....

A lot of younger gamers don't recognize Pacman anymore and Donkey Kong is just another character in SSBB as far as some are concerned.

Yeah Pacman is starting to lose a lot of relevance because Namco can't find much to do with the franchise out of an awesome XBLA game. However, I would think that out of the adult community Pacman would be just as recognizeable as Mario is o at least comparitively so.
@coastelove-Donkey Kong is not vey recognizeable at all. Sometimes even I forget who he is. It doesn't help that he's modeled after a more famous icon.
