Forums - Sales - Year of the X

Okay... I've asked this question in a number of threads, and all I seem to get back is the sound of crickets.

Can someone please explain to me why a console need to have a "Year of console X" to be considered successful by some?  For some strange reason I keep thinking that the success of a console is something that builds over time, but isn't defined by a fixed calendar year, i.e. - 2009, 2010, etc.

Obviously, some people feel differently based on the threads I've been reading, and I would really like to understand the reasoning.

Because the PS3 fanboys have labelled most years the year of the PS3

Okay... so it sounds like it's a way for some to pump up the morale, so to speak. I was a little confused when I heard you say this in the other thread, as you don't seem like a fanboy. LOL!

actually no, after the terrible 2007 (that actually sold better than 360 first year).

ps3 did a turn around many 2009 games were thought to be 2008 games like FF13 GT5 mgs4 and many others thats why people said 2008 ps3 year.

but delays moved it, it was a great year better than 2007 by alot but not as great as it was going to be.,

So, what do you do if the PS3 sells like crazy next year and people proclaim 2009 "The year of the PS3", then the PS3 does even better the next year, then the next?  You're going to end up with "Years of the PS3".

It basicly works like this, think of when a console being released, its a infant. Young, new, and well, can't do much of anything yet. But as time goes on, the console matures and at a certain point, gamers believe that consoles have matured to the point where buying one should be justified for everyone not just fanboys. This is generally brought forth though gaming titles being released, and overall just a good year to have a PS3 or to buy one.

Thats my opinion of how it works. Ain't it cool? =p
