Nintendo is stockpiling for December.

Here in Germany in every store I can see huge stacks of Wii, X360 and PS3. And this is the case for many months now. There was a time when Wii was supply constraint, but that was in 2007 and early 2008. I don't think Nintendo cuts back deliveries to NA to be able to supply Germany.

The units that Nintendo doesn't ship to NA right now are stockpiled for the holiday season in NA where the demand for the Wii is by far the greatest. They expect to ship at least 5m Wiis to NA in the last quarter of this calendar year, but even that might not be enough to cover the demand for the system.

In 4th quarter of 2007 Nintendo sold 3.7 mio. Wii in NA. I expect demand to be lower this year.

You are probably right.  Demand last year was for probably about 10-15m or more, but it's hard to say for sure.  Just going by ebay prices last year.  Without supply meeting demand it's hard to tell for certain.

Demand will probably fall to about 7m this year.

10-15 mio.? 7 mio.? Please get serious ;)

I expect demand for the Wii to be lower than 3.7 mio this year in NA.

I expect demand for the HD consoles to be lower than 3.7mio this year in NA.

Probably right. Because there are still so many people without HD TV.

But in 4th quarter 2009 consoles without HD ability will have a problem...

That's great... for you. But you shouldn't exclude reality when you want to come to an accurate analysis of the situation. What in your opinion suggests that demand for the Wii will be lower than last year? The holiday lineup is stronger than last year and the variety is broader. Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and SSBB are having their first holiday season, Wii Music and Animal Crossing are guaranteed to be million sellers. 3rd party games are also better than last year, so what's going to slow down demand?

From the look of things, it's making more sense to expect bigger demand for Wii hardware and software this year than it was last year.

- more people than last year posess HD TVs

- economy/banking crisis reduces demand for consumer devices.  Economics see many parallels to the big economy crisis 1929. Companies like GM fight bancruptcy, Banks like Lehman Brothers are finished etc. etc. etc..... . Isn't this a topic in American Media?

- price reductions on the HD consoles

- Wii hype lower than last year

Nice week for Microsoft and the 360 =)

1) This doesn't seem to have much of an effect on console purchases. Japan is the Wii's most dominant region and it's also the country with the highest adoption rate for HDTVs. Additionally many Wiis are hooked up to HDTVs all around the world and it doesn't seem to bother the owners that the Wii doesn't output HD resolutions.

2) This is going to hurt the HD consoles more so than the Wii, if it shows effects on the videogames industry. Out of the current gen systems the Wii has the highest perceived value which the economy crises might only strengthen further.

3) Just because something gets cheaper, doesn't mean that people walk into stores to buy something that they didn't want in the first place. The HD consoles had several price cuts and every time the Wii was unaffected. The only thing that happened after a price cut was that the sales of the other HD console dropped.

4) That's pure speculation on your part.

1) I think Japan is a different region than NA or Europe. IMO the market penetration with HD consoles here in Europa and also in America will rise with the market penetration with HD TVs. Nintendo already is developing a HD Wii - this would certainly not be the case if the low Wii resolution wouldn't bother Wii owners.

2) The economy crisis will hurt the more the more expensive the consumer device is. MS already cut prices on its consoles. There is now an 360 for $199.

3) When your competitor sells for $249 a price cut from $399 to $349 is not the same as a price cut from $279 to $199. And....just because people bought a Wii doesn't mean that they wouldn't have liked the 360 or the PS3 more. Many of them probably just didn't have enough money. $349 or even more ist just out of reach for most console customers.

4)I don't think so. The 'waggle-factor' just isn't as exciting to the people as it was last year. People do no longer line up to try it out etc.

Nintendo is really keeping units away from NA right now, heh. This holiday season for Wii/DS is going to be epic if they get all the units shipped.
