1) This doesn't seem to have much of an effect on console purchases. Japan is the Wii's most dominant region and it's also the country with the highest adoption rate for HDTVs. Additionally many Wiis are hooked up to HDTVs all around the world and it doesn't seem to bother the owners that the Wii doesn't output HD resolutions. 2) This is going to hurt the HD consoles more so than the Wii, if it shows effects on the videogames industry. Out of the current gen systems the Wii has the highest perceived value which the economy crises might only strengthen further. 3) Just because something gets cheaper, doesn't mean that people walk into stores to buy something that they didn't want in the first place. The HD consoles had several price cuts and every time the Wii was unaffected. The only thing that happened after a price cut was that the sales of the other HD console dropped. 4) That's pure speculation on your part. |
1) I think Japan is a different region than NA or Europe. IMO the market penetration with HD consoles here in Europa and also in America will rise with the market penetration with HD TVs. Nintendo already is developing a HD Wii - this would certainly not be the case if the low Wii resolution wouldn't bother Wii owners.
2) The economy crisis will hurt the more the more expensive the consumer device is. MS already cut prices on its consoles. There is now an 360 for $199.
3) When your competitor sells for $249 a price cut from $399 to $349 is not the same as a price cut from $279 to $199. And....just because people bought a Wii doesn't mean that they wouldn't have liked the 360 or the PS3 more. Many of them probably just didn't have enough money. $349 or even more ist just out of reach for most console customers.
4)I don't think so. The 'waggle-factor' just isn't as exciting to the people as it was last year. People do no longer line up to try it out etc.
