Looks lovely but as others have said - do you ever control him?? Seems like nothing but running forward, no thinking or skill involved. Where's the fun in that?

Did you watch the videos? Did you see the points where the person stopped, walked left and right, ran into things?
Did you ever play the original games?

So you've played it then?
wow, they "fixed" Sonic's lighting. looks like Sonic Heroes to me :P
the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
Someone before has compared Sonic games to rollercoasters, while Mario games to a theme park's haunted house.
Rollercoasters are fast and are on rails-- very exhilarating. A haunted house, on the other hand, is slow and fun to explore. Both provide different experiences.
Me, I just like rollercoasters more. That's just it.

I have Sonic and Sonic 3 on VC so yes and while I've never been a big Sonic fan it seems to me that a lot of the gameplay involved backtracting to other parts of the level you didn't/couldn't reach before, and a bit of thought at times in how to get there. This looks like one straight direct route. But I admit, I'm no Sonic expert.

No, no , no!
Sonic was about as little back-tracking as possible. You run through the level fast, get to the end fast, fight the boss fast! You don't stop to explore every inch of the level on a single run-through or you run out of time and die. The goal in the original games was to get to the end before you ran out of time and get a lot of rings.
The reason Sonic games were fun to replay though is because there were usually half a dozen different ways to get through the level, secrets to find, mini-games/stages to run into, etc. Unlike a Mario game where you might stop and explore the entire level before going on, Sonic was made to be replayed over and over. ^_^

I don't want to sound rude but have you played the original games? I know you did since you asked other people but let me remind you something. You had 10 minutes to complete the levels in Sonic while you had about 4-5 in Mario games. Sonic games were not about going fast. Most of the time, you would go rather slowly because there were a lot of obstacles and enemies on the screen. It's just in a few parts of some of the levels where you would go extremely fast.
Mario levels have always been more linear and shorter with a few secret passages hidden. Sonic levels were huge and nonlinear so it's true that you had to revisit them over and over again.
Personally, I'm not really interested in Sonic Unleashed because it seems to be a bit boring. I'll try it though. We'll see.
How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Mario games of the time period also had stages much shorter than Sonic ones and I actually have run out of time in Sonic games (notably the original/Sonic Chaos for the Gamegear - freaking water stages...).
I always played to go as fast as possible except in areas like the water stages and desert stages. The original Sonic felt like it had a lot more things to make you stop than Sonic 2 though.
And yes I have played the original games. My Genesis came with Sonic 2 and I later picked up Sonic, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 3 (though Sonic 3 was used ><).
