Forums - Sony - Developers Starting to back PS3

If you don't think developers primarily back the system with the most software sales you need a reality check. X360 still the prime system for third party sales.

Guess its a good thing for ps3.

i still expect more from the ps3 -after seeing R2- , i'm relying on sony studios to deliver better games

Look at sales of Star Wars PS3 VS 360. Why would you focus your attention to the system that will sell less software?

It still doesn't make any sense to make the game for ps3 and then do a gimped version for 360. Not that 360 would be getting the gimped version as it can do anything ps3 can...other than storage space which if absolutely necessary can be done on multiple DVDs.

First why would it be gimped? Make a game for one console then optimise it for the other, in the end you get 2 games optimised for their respective consoles. More DVDs cost money, in the end 3 or more DVDs cost more then 1 Blu-ray. (Doesn't it?)

And yes, 360 sells more but over time that might not be the case, one detaining factor si that currently on the PS3 games they don't lose money from piracy.

I corrected myself and said it will not be gimped for the 360...

I did not read more than the first page of that article but it seemed to me like it was saying that PS3 will be the primary development platform soon. I don't see that being the case. It will definetly get all the major release 3rd party titles as its a profitable console to develop for...but as long as the 360 gets more sales I don't see why any developer would not use that as the main development platform. It has been said that developing for the ps3 will make games better for the 360 too...and I fully support this. However Im just thinking realisticly...360 is more PC related (hence easier to develop) and will sell more copies of a game (despite piracy) so why would any company in the right mind that is not sony sponsored decide to focus on ps3 and then try to get the 360 version ready after?

Look at howmany games were delayed for ps3 due to 3rd party developers inability to get good results. People will have to expalin the fiscal period reports to CEO's and stockhodlers on why the game missed its deadline due to development for a console which will not make as much revenue.

@disolitude

If you find yourself developing the same game for two consoles, you either develop for them simutaneously or develop for one then port to the other. We all can agree on that. But also if you decide to develop for one then port to the other, you might as well take the easier route. So if some developers finds that it's easier to develop for the PS3 first and then port to the 360 (instead of the otherway around), then that's the best route for those developers since they were planning to make the same game for the 360 and PS3 anyway.

EDIT: And I strongly expect that PS3 multi-platform games were delayed because they were being ported from the 360 version.  This holds water because during the infancy of the PS3, games announced for the PS3 that were multi-platform were already released for the 360.  Thus, it was developed for the 360 FIRST, then PORTED to the PS3 taking a considerable extended period before its PS3 release.  It's not as common now as it was before because developers are getting a better handle on PS3 development while using the PS3 as a lead platform.  Do you not see this trend?

I completely agree...but the bolded part is something that hasn't happened yet very often. Actually I don't know any developers that have said its easier to develop for ps3...

the closest to that statement is ID Games saying that textures may have to be changed due to lack of storage on the 360...but I don't think that implies that its easier to develop for ps3.

We don't know if it "is something that hasn't happened yet very often."  So that's not the issue.  And nowhere I can find that anyone ever said that "its easier to develop for ps3."  So I don't know where you are trying to go with this.  So ease of developing is also not the issue.  And even with the PS3 being harder to developer for (which I believe), it's still worth the developers' efforts to make a PS3 multi-platform game.  But since you brought up the "ease" issue, this also validates the preferrence of developing on the PS3 first because conventionally it would be easier to develop a game from the ground up instead of a series of patchwork (port).  So if it's harder to develop for the PS3 than the 360, develop for the PS3 first then it would be easier to port to the 360.  You'd have a higher shot of two quality versions.

It will be very interesting to see how thrid parties react in the next year. With SCE making games that use the PS3 to its fullest, it is going to become very dissipointing looking at multi platform games. SCE published games next year will all be on 50GB blu-rays, and you can bet that Killzone 2 is just the beggining. I think the third party devs are going to have to start to use the BR room to add more textures, audio, animations, and the like, if they want to see continued success on the PS3.

Developing with PS3 as the lead platform = commercial suicide
