Forums - Sales - Can someone help me with graphics, textures, gpu etc

Hi everyone:

I've been playing video games for almost 20 years now, but I am sad to say that I know very little about graphics of consoles.  I'm the kind of person who says stuff like, "The graphics look good; the graphics look bad; the graphics look ok." I don't understand when people post about graphics and say things like "The textures in that game don't look good." What are textures? The only thing I really understand are things like 8-bit and 16-bit etc. I mean is the GPU all that matters in producing graphics or are there are alot of other things also? So I was hoping someone could give me a good website where it would explain all the different kinds of things about graphics and gpus etc or if someone would like to try to explain it to me on here. I know I only listed a few things, but I am curious about everything that goes into it. Thanks for the help.

Edit: just realized that I put this under "sales discussion" and not "gaming discussion" can I change that somehow?

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

What are textures?

Textures are what make up the surfaces of objects in game. When someone is saying the textures look bad they mean the walls, ground, etc look bland and boring.

The only thing I really understand are things like 8-bit and 16-bit etc.

The GPU is a major factor but the processor and amount of random access memory (ram) plays a factor. The stronger the processor the more physics based graphics and effects can be seen and rendered. More ram there becomes more the ability to have more content on screen at once versus having to reload textures and models.

So I was hoping someone could give me a good website where it would explain all the different kinds of things about graphics and gpus etc or if someone would like to try to explain it to me on here. i'm like u
"good or bad"
i get crazy when someone says "framerate drops" and "textures are bad"

Objects in a 3D video game are made up of triangles called polygons. The more polygons a GPU can draw, the more detailed and less blocky an object can look...or the more objects in total.

Textures are the art work that is applied to the polygons visible surface. They are just like your computer .jpg type images such that resolution, file size, zoomed in/out, etc...can affect how sharp the texture looks.

Special effects can be applied on top of the textures to give them a snazzy appearance such as a dirt map to make it look dirty or a highlight map to give a shiny effect.

Further more you can apply shader effects which work much like the extra texture maps but are harder to render. Bump mapping can add shadows and texture to a flat looking surface for example.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

tomshardware.com anandtech.com there are lots of places to look and compare screens shots on gamespot.com or other review spots where they compare videocards to PS3 vs 360. all this does is compare hardware of the same game running on different platforms with different features turned on or off.
the biggest comparisons here are 360 to ps3 cause they play alot of the same games which comes back down to ati vs nvidia gpu's, of course the gpu's in a console are optimized just for gaming and operate differently then thier pc counterparts. have no burdening OS to support and hog system resources.

still most complaints are usually fanboy rants about how the game runs better on A console compared to B console because I have A console.

and wounldnt it be great if the whole world had A console. yes it would:]
