Forums - Sales - Tretton: PS3 Sales Better Than Expected, Sales May Be Affected by Shortages

The difference in price between PS3 and 360 has widened due to 360 price cuts in all regions.
The price of the console is the main reason PS3 sales are lagging at the moment. A small PS3 price cut before Xmas could help increase demand for PS3 and increase momentum of PS3 sales.

We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year

If true then that means they shipped 2.5m last quarter.

Tretton said sales could be affected by products shortages, which he anticipated would be "not drastic."

"I'd say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending," he said.

I can see how they might have some shortages, it seems they've recently upped production from 1m/month to 1.5m/month. Last year they shipped 4.9m in this quarter, so they may not have much to spare if they only produce 4.5m this quarter along with whatever they have left over from last quarter (0.5m?).

Maybe they can increase production again before the holidays though.

If they weren't expecting Ps3 sales to be this good ( which is relative). How come he predicted PS3 sales to end up over 150 million? I wonder what his response will be when the PS3 doesn't do that well.

Am guessing they expect it to sell more per year during the years to come... But how much is what am wondering.....

4 ≈ One

Yeah if Sony are expecting shortages on 120-130,000 a week WW sales, they must have dev problems.

If they are expecting "very convenient shortages" then I expect MS will have the same if not a bigger problem in Europe now that their sales are up by 214% in U.K alone this week -

Xbox 360 Sales Skyrocket 214% in U.K.
The Xbox 360 has been outselling Sony's PS3 in the region by more than two-to-one, "reaffirming its strong momentum in Europe."

Plz sony, no more lame excuses,, its making us "your loyal followers" get mad !!!
Shortages???? give me a break, u can come up with a better excuse,
its natural that a console sheaper than yours to sell better and kick your ass sales-wise, live with it until you cut your prices. until then, just be silent

Currently Playing: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), White Knight Chronicles (PS3), PES 2010 (PS3), Killzone 2 (PS3)

Games to Finish: Silent hill Homecoming (PS3), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Oblivion (PS3)

There have been PS3 shortages, when they have gone from old models to new models there have been times when the market is almost dry. The MGS4 bundle also sold out within minutes of stores opening.

The 360 has had the same problems this year. Since the recent price cut in NA arcade units are nowhere to be found at any store i have been to over the past couple of weeks. 360 units are also sold out all over the place in Japan.

Wasn't Trenton also the guy who said the PS3 was sold out near launch... when Penny Arcade went to their local stores and pointed out all sorts of PS3s that were already sold out?

Still we'll see.  Hope there aren't shortages.  That will actually make the good models more expensive on the secondary market.

@BKK2

interesting.....maybe they did

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Well maybe Sony is purposely holding back manufacturing of PS3's. They are constantly revising their hardware to get costs down, so many they only want to manufacture as many consoles at this price as they need to.

I think they are trying to follow a business model more like Nintendo did. They want the consoles they manufacture to go directly into customers hands so they can minimize consoles they create at the higher manufacturing costs.I think the PS3 will be bought as soon as they arrive in stores this holiday season but we won't be seeing the PS3 mountains we have gotten used to.

I would think their mentality would be that anyone who can't find a PS3 would either A. Wait for it to return to in-stock status B. Wait until next year to buy a PS3, a point at which manufacturing a PS3 would be in the black.

If by mid October we don't hear any rumbling of a price drop, I think the Sony really will just weather the storm this year and hope the 360 price drop doesn't catch on.

I mean the 360 has started outselling the PS3, but to balance out the lead the PS3 has gained thus far it would have to put up some impressive numbers in NA.
