Bitmap Frogs owned you and you ran like a pussy. Why am I not surprised?
Listen ...bitmap and I have been going back and forth about this for the whole day pretty much...and I had enough.

You dropped in a couple of times and said your 2 cents when you felt like it which is great...good to have input from you. But you have no right accusing me I ran anywhere since you had nothing to do with my argument to begin with.

You guys are clearly the majority in this thread so it seems like youa re right but in the real world you'd all look like complete fools arguing that on average Macs are competitevly priced to PCs with same specs.

Listen, I really only was talking about that because you had said something TO ME:
@Final-Fan
Everyone took this "Apple macbooks are competitive at the launch of the product cycle" statement as a fact. I don't think its true at all. I have never seen a mac with same features priced closely to a brand name laptop.

that Bitmap Frogs has ALREADY shown was not always true.  But you ignored his evidence by saying you were quitting the discussion at that exact moment -- coincidentally, and not because he had just blown you completely out of the water.  So in reality, your discussion with Bitmap Frogs was very relevant to your discussion with me, which is why I brought it up.

(By the way, that was obviously a complete lie because you're still here responding MULTIPLE times to MANY people, even Bitmap Frogs, and yet not going back to trying to prove why his EXAMPLE of a competitively priced Mac does not show that Macs are at least sometimes competitively priced.)

By the way, it's interesting that you think that focusing on that one thing is some kind of excuse to ignore the rest of my post.

P.S.  Even if I had truly had absolutely nothing to do with the discussion, I don't see what's stopping me from (as an independent observer) saying that one of the two sides was clearly dodging/ignoring solid evidence presented by the other.

QuickTime works fine for me in Windows -- the main problem I have is that all its Apple Software Update updates come bundled with iTunes, which I don't want on my computer, so if I want to update QuickTime I have to do it the long way. Come on, Apple, WTF.

I'm not arguing about price, but how do the bolded things make the Dell better than the Mac? And since you started on that road, what about some Mac-only features that you get with the MacBook Pro? A large MultiTouch trackpad, MagSafe power connector, iLife software pack?

The Dell is cheaper, has more memory, a larger hard drive, better GPU and better resolution in the built-in webcam. I don't know how the Dell warranty compares to Apple's warranty, so I can't comment on that. But, apart from being a lot cheaper, I wouldn't say the Dell is MUCH better. Also, I'd be interested to know what are the dimensions of said Dell, and the battery life, and noise levels. MacBook Pro's are damn near totally silent, which is a big plus for some people.

WOW....this is a HUGE increase

BTW is it just me or was the site like OFFLINE for 1 HOUR!

It wasn't just you. VGC is choking to death on something.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple's laptop share scale back a little bit the next time data is released. As the article notes, this is data from the back-to-school season, reflecting Apple's strong popularity among young people.  yuppies.

Fix'd

I hate to do that, but it had to be done.

And for good reason...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. i mentioned those games because he did.

and if Tom's said mac book pro over priced only $5 vs a Windows PC - I have lost a lot of respect for Toms. Thats very far from true.

Dude, learn 2 read. It's Mac Pro not Macbook Pro they are comparing at that tom's link. By the way, why are you bolding all the bloated, useless, marketingware crap dell bundles with the computer? It's jarring because you ignore that the macbook pro comes with the iLife suite which as far as consumer-grade software goes it's rather good and way more useful than things like "Dell Owners Manual installed on your system" or the "internet search and portal". Nevermind the fact that Adobe reader is free to download from Adobe, etc. The MacBook Pro list could easily be expanded mentioning it includes Leopard, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, FrontRow, etc, etc...

And as far as disolitude's snickering answer, you aren't convinced but at least you aren't spreading misinformation anymore. It's funny how in the face of proof you stonewall like that instead of admitting things aren't like you thought they were, but OK. We made progress today.

As for Microsoft software for Mac, Office used to be an abortion but the latest version has improved considerably. Which is no surprise because ever since apple sales started blooming they are getting some nice revenue from selling office to mac users.

Software prices shouldn't factor into the mac vs windows debate since you can easily download any software for free from any of the millions of available torrent websites.

Dude, that's promoting piracy.

I gues Dell is still good value in USA, but here, when I bought my laptop, on the models I found suitable to my needs either there wasn't anymore the option to have XP instead of Vista or adding the options I needed and delivery fees to base model price I got excessive prices... I ended to buy an HP, in that period, excluding loss leader models with almost inexistent availability, it was the best equipped for the price I wanted to spend , and although it was quite awkward to get it working with Kubuntu 7.10, I managed to do it, and now, with 8.04, installation went smoother than when I have to install Windows, only the Agere winmodem is still unsupported, but the rare times I'm forced to use 56k modem instead of Wi-Fi connection to ADSL routers, I can boot XP.

When was it that you installed XP on your Mac? I'm just asking because bootcamp was in beta for quite some time before becoming a part of the OS X install, maybe that had something to do with the bugs and glitches you experienced? Anyway, I'd like to think that I'm a fan of Apple, but I don't pretend that Apple's shit doesn't stink. I know there are some seriously irritating, rabid Apple fanboys roaming the web, but quite frankly everybody who I know who uses Macs is a level headed person. They have all come from using Windows, and they all like using their Macs a lot better, as do I. Apple maintains a tighter control of their platform than MS, and it has both pros and cons, but for me the overall better user experience is well worth the price premium. And, judging from the sales numbers, an increasing number of people are thinking the same.

I got my mac in Jan 2007. It was pretty simliar to the base model they have now except it had 512 of ram...I cant remember if bootcamp was in beta or not...I bought it with the idea of installing windows but once I foudn out that the blackberry desktop manager i was using did not work with mac osx and I had to get windows on there fast.

Once windows crashed I kinda gave up and got a PC laptop. I had the mac stored away for a bit without using it...and eventually this year I sold it for pretty cheap since DVD reader had issues with ejecting disks.

Never in all of this did I become an anti apple person...I still own an ipod video despite Itunes being a horrid syncing program and I understand that technology isn't perfect so what happened to my laptop isn't Apples fault. But I definetly am in the PC camp if I am asked to choose.

no new mac laptop shipped with 512 in ram at that time, the min was 1gig, and had been for sometime, you might have gotten a referb, you can go to apple-history.com to confirm this if you want
