Forums - Sales - Moore: Sony's Business 'Crumbling' in Japan

So wait, Nintendo is only competing with Sony these day then yeah?

I mean MS likes to toss around Nintendo's figures in the face of Sony, yet also likes to make the statement that Nintendo isn't in the same category as Xbox and this "gen."

Beyond poking fun at the rhetoric being tossed about, I do think Sony is in need of a major overhaul for their Japan sector, at least against the Xbox. I think it's too late for Sony in regards to eclipsing Nintendo and the Wii, yet they need to rev up their gaming devision in order to not slip up any further against the 360 for the "HD" gaming portion of the market.

Until then Sony really needs to sink in to their European "stronghold." And the worst thing they can be doing right now is -- not -- giving them a price drop.

The figures show that Moore's comment is true. Nothing else to say about it. The PS3 has already had a good number of significant "hits" in Japan - none of which have sold a decent amount of units.

The battle isn't over yet, but its starting to get real dangerous for Sony (in its console homeland at least).

Sales of "Dragon Quest:Swords" is like the Sony headquarters taking a direct hit from a large missile... and if HSG fails to sell well in the first month - it will be like a mini-nuke backfiring within their own HQ. (Sony have already lost the battle on "Planet Handheld" - Ninty's stronghold of the last 20 years).

No doubt they are advertising like crazy at the moment - doing anything to get those sales coming...

Well besides the point that MS is in no place to talk about Sony's Japan strategy crumbling, the Sony strategy is simple: games.

The following games are going to be sales drivers for the PS3 in Japan to different extents:

Hot Shots Golf 5
Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIII
White Knight Story
Gran Turismo 5

I'm sure there are others too, but these are the biggest I think.

So before we call the Sony strategy in Japan is crumbling, let's see how FF XIII and these other games do.

here is a more enlightening graph, its the n64 vs gamecube vs PS3, both N64 and GC are outselling PS3 at this point in time, and actually PS3 was selling better than GC and lost its steam and is lagging back at gamecube sales...

I am not suggesting for sure that it will be mean PS3 suddenly outsells the Wii for this generation in Japan, I am saying that the so called collapse of PS strategy in Japan is premature when there are very big games that are coming that will move consoles.

Okay, now we're just getting nit picky about the word "collapse," it appears. Let's say you're right, and these upcoming games do make a significant dent. Let's say, as a reasonable estimation, that these games double the pace of the PS3 sales over the course of the generation, compared to what they are now. Double is a lot, as that's never actually happened before, but let's run with it anyway.

In terms of raw units sold the PS3 would then have sold approximately 50 percent as many units as its predecessor did, and in terms of market share, would have less than half of its predecessor. It would be a second place finisher, not first. At this point in time, a 50 percent reduction is a rosey picture, as it's currently at less than 1/3 it's market share and 1/3 its sales, and those figures are still falling farther.

If you don't want to call a 50 percent depression in sales and market share a "collapse," that's fine, but that simply sidesteps the general point. Sony has lost a profound amount of market share and sales in Japan, even if we assume (as you do) that PS3 sales will pick up in a year.  Perhaps we should call it a "crisis" or "depression?"

Sony shall not care much about their gamedivision especially because Blu Ray sales are skyrocking.

If by skyrocketing you mean pretty much doubling the already abysmal sales of HD-DVD, then you're right.

LOL MS should learn to shut up.

Sony can slam the hell out of them for their quality and they are selling less 360 worldwide then Ps3 is, even with the core at half the PS3 cost in most places.
