Forums - Sales Discussion - Moore: Sony's Business 'Crumbling' in Japan

@carlos710,

I'm a Sony Fan,
but Sony is in the big shit in japan,
If u remember SONY E3 2007 (yeah the last one), u have price drop coming + lot of games for NA and Europe

But what about Japan ? what about new games targetted for them ?

For the moment, Japan buy Wii and DS
They just dont see PS3 and Xbox360
We all expect that japan doesnt see Xbox360
but the bad sales for PS3 were not at all expected.
(even more if u consider the PS3 price that is not so expensive in japan)

It is as if japan market is closed to Sony and Microsoft cause all the hype is on the Wii:

GTA, dont care
Halo, dont care
Mario ==> wii
Zelda ==> wii
Metroid ==> wii
DQ ==> Wii

PS3 can be saved with 2 things :
Everybody's golf 5 with his 300 k pre order (japan release is 26 july ?)
FFXIII that is still a very big franchise
(I could add PES and DMC4 too ...)
But it is not sure it will be sufficient...

Dolla - although the X360 is selling considerably less than the PS3 and Wii, we both know that it's doing far better than the first Xbox did.

In it's first full Jan-Dec year (2003, 9mo after launch), sales kept decreasing - it sold 100k units that year, then just 35k in 2004.

Whereas the X360 sold 200k it's first full year (1mo after launch), and has already sold 120-125k thus far into it's second year. MS obviously isn't doing good there, but better than what they had done. An improvement is always, under any circumstance, better than a decrease.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I agree with MrStickBall. This is really, really easy to highlight. Here is a comparison of the PS2 and PS3 at this point in there lives in Japan:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS3&reg2=Japan&cons3=PS2&reg3=Japan&align=1

The PS3 has quite literally sold less than 1/3 as much as its predecessor had at this time.

Now the 360 and original Xbox:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=XB&reg1=Japan&cons2=X360&reg2=Japan&cons3=XB&reg3=Japan&align=1

The 360 is now ahead of its predecessor in Japan, and most notably, it's gaining speed (although we're still talking very small numbers) while its predessor was losing speed (the original Xbox started off strong then trailed off).

So Sony has seen its sales figures decrease by 200 percent, while Microsoft has thus far seen an increase of approximately 5 percent (and growing). That's what Moore is talking about. Of course, you're absolutely right that neither system is doing very well in comparison to the Wii.

Well besides the point that MS is in no place to talk about Sony's Japan strategy crumbling, the Sony strategy is simple: games.

The following games are going to be sales drivers for the PS3 in Japan to different extents:

Hot Shots Golf 5
Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIII
White Knight Story
Gran Turismo 5

I'm sure there are others too, but these are the biggest I think.

So before we call the Sony strategy in Japan is crumbling, let's see how FF XIII and these other games do.

 There, I fixed that for ya.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Wait until late 2008 for Final Fantasy XIII? Come on, Ck, that's not how this market works. Even if FF XIII does well, you're still looking at a 200 percent decrease in market share in the meantime!

This is just a more vague, less immediate form of the "Wait until X game comes out, then you'll see." Wait another year, or even more? Sony's Japanese market share is crumbling right now! You can't wait two years in to a generational lifecycle to have a killer app.

 How can you say this though when its release is sooo far off?  The only one game you said was HSG that will be coming out soon that could move consoles.  If it takes until FFXIII to move consoles its over for Sony and we all know that.

Here's a simple parallel, Ck:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=DS&reg1=Japan&cons2=PSP&reg2=Japan&cons3=DS&reg3=Japan

This is the timeline of the PSP and DS in Japan. Given that Final Fantasy XIII is set to launch about two years in to the PS3's lifespan, let's look at that point in the DS/PSP race: at that point, the DS had outsold the PSP by nearly 3 to 1, at 12 million and 4 million, respectively (note that currently, the PS3 is actually on track to do even worse than this, comparatively speaking). Are you seriously suggesting that a game that far down the line (in terms of generational life cycles, 2 years in is effectively middle aged) could somehow cause a momentous shift in sales?

I think one could reasonably argue that the trends are already in place and that the market share we see now is, with a little wiggle room, what we'll see 2, 3, and 4 years from now. But suggesting that a huge shift will occur over a year from now? No system in history has ever come even close to dramatic shifts at that point in time.

 Waitstation 3

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I am not suggesting for sure that it will be mean PS3 suddenly outsells the Wii for this generation in Japan, I am saying that the so called collapse of PS strategy in Japan is premature when there are very big games that are coming that will move consoles.
