Forums - Nintendo - A reorganization of generations

leo-j.. who said anything about motion controls

read the definition he gave to the "generation 3" games

"Characteristics: Games sold seperately, third party publishers become dominant force in the industry, 3D graphics, focus on cinematic gaming"

Does this apply to 360? Yes
Does this apply to PS3? Yes
Does this apply to Wii? No

therefore it needs to be in a separate generation based on these particular definitions of generations... who knows what the "generation 4" characteristics could entail.. wii is the only console that doesn't fit into any of the three previous generation definitions, and hence makes its own generation, again, based on these definitions

you do know the ps3 have motion controls too right?

=_= fail in this thread is big big big and biased.

and also ps3 and 360 controls support rumbple and are wireless.

not only that at least game consoles make the jump from SD TVs

to HD Tvs, and sir that isn't graphics. its resolution.

and not only that... they come with better and more social online service.

Oh! How could I forget that the PS3 DOES have motion control. So should the PS3 be recognized in your special 4th generation.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I think a lot of the anger that people have is based upon their own definition of what a generation is and what it means to be in a different generation ... Think about it this way, a higher numbered generation is not necessarily a better generation but it does represent a reaction to the previous generation and a rejection of the values of the previous generation; the number is really just a representation of the sequence that they arrived in, and you could adequately define them as the Red, Yellow, Blue and Beige generation if you wanted to.

To this day we still see companies produce very successful "first generation" consoles with their 5 in 1 arcade games that attach to the TV, and there is nothing saying that the introduction of the "fourth generation" consoles will mean an end to the "third generation" way of doing things. In fact, it is quite possible that in the (relatively) near future a company could see the direction of the industry in the 4th generation, see certain "flaws" and move in a completely different direction which might share a lot of characteristics with previous generations.

@Jo21: I think he knows that. Wii too has motion controls, wireless controllers and rumble. But what that has to do with the subject?

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

At which point did I say the fourth generation had anything to do with motion controlls?

Wow he got flamed quick. There was nothing in the post saying that the wii was better or that motion control makes a new generation. He is just saying that it is different than the others.

@HappySqurriel I think that we will see a split in the next generation with some entrants in the continued third generation and some new ones in the fourth generation as per your breakdown.

I agree with Happy Squirrel

So what could define 4th gen? Maybe intuitive gaming for everyone?

You could organize generations by what is changing the industry and what is sustaining and building on the previous sets of rules.

The first generation would include everything from the first Pong machines to the Atari 2600 and its competitors. All these systems were seen as natural progress of the industry.

The second generation would start with the NES, because the industry experienced a drastic change at that time. Everyone was predicting that home computers would be the future and consoles would be dead, yet the opposite became reality. The NES's success went against convential wisdom and the "truth" of the industry at its time. This generation includes all following systems up until the 360 and PS3.

The third generation starts with the Wii which is again going against the "truth" of this industry and was predicted to fail based on the established set of rules which reach back to the NES.

So in summary, to say it with leo-j's words: Wii = best!

I thought about a very similar organization when I was trying to group consoles together based on what it means to be a 'Gamer' for a particular system ...

There really was a seperation in what "Gamer" meant before the industry collapse of 1983 and after the industry was revived with the NES and this definition persisted until the Saturn/Playstation were released. What it means to be a 'Gamer' in relation to the Wii is much different than what it meant before hand.

guys, don't get mad. It's quite clever. Let me try my own list.

1st Gen : PS1
2ND Gen: ps2, wii, xbox, dreamcast, gamecube
3rd Gen : ps3, xbox360

gaming started with the ps1 for me. My opinion folks, not facts.
