Forums - Microsoft - MS's next XBOX already looks to have several disadvantages in terms of cost

Rumors have it that M$ is looking into a proprietary format.

That makes the most sense, go propertery since they have experience with HD-DVD drives, if the property drive can upscale DVD and hold 25-50gb of data should be fine.  Even if they dont go that route threaten Sony with it so they may give them a break to adopt blu-ray

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Another thing yall should remember that Sony gaming does not represent all of Sony. All of Sony's different branches are very different.

Just like how Sony pictures doesn't give a crap that a Sony Pictures IP appears on a 360, Sony doesn't care that Microsoft uses BluRay as long as they get their money.

Microsoft Games and Sony games can try to one-up each other all day but that doesn't apply to granddaddy Sony and Microsoft studios. It's in nobodies best interest to screw the other one over that way.

You make a good point with MS currenlty at 21 million that would be a lot more Blue ray drives which mean more blu ray movie sales.

As others have stated, Blu-Ray won't be cost prohibitive if MS chooses to use it in the 720. That stated, I won't be surprised if you MS went with proprietary HD-DVD based disc. It would certainly help with piracy while providing a substantial storage advantage over DVD. Three layer HD-DVDs stored 51GB.

Wonder if M$ will go for a proprietary high-capacity disk? In terms of costs, highly doubt it, but if it prevents piracy by a good percentage, I wouldn't be surprised on that option.

MS has proven they like proprietary, they use a proprietary wireless controller instead of Bluetooth, they use a proprietary Hard drive and have a proprietary wirless adapter not much of a stretch to add disk to the list.  I think it depends on how much Blu Ray will cost to add to the machine.  It behoves both Sony, MS

Sony needs more drives out there and MS has this generation pushed out 21 million that would be a HUGE boost to blu ray

MS would not need to develop a proprietarty drive

I don't think that will happen.  If they go HD-DVD then they can't play BluRay movies.  BluRay isn't big right now, but how big will it be in at least two years when the possibility of the new XBox releases?  How big will it be by the end of that XBox's life cycle?

Joint Sony-NEC venture? Sony recently bought this "venture"... so, all profits from this go to Sony.

True but they could sell it as upscale DVD player.  I do agree when the 720 comes out blu ray will be a lot bigger than it is now, I think it benefits both MS and Sony for it to be blu ray but we will have to wait and see

Let's clarify some things.
Sony doesn't own Blu Ray, although it's one of the main members of its consortium, BDA.
BDA decided, by members agreement, fees for devices and media, that once paid grant forfait indemnification for the patents involved. So Sony can't impose higher fees to MS, although it's true that as Sony owns a lot of Blu Ray's patents, it will receive quite an high share from the fees paid by MS.
To cut it short: if MS decides to use BD, it will indirectly pay money to Sony, but not more than any Blu Ray licensee else.

I think people forget that Microsoft has also got a piece of the pie for Blu Ray. They get a kickback on every disk sold as the Blu Ray disks are using their codecs!

Tease.

If they go HD-DVD then they can't play BluRay movies.
