Forums - Sales - 360 to outsell the ps3 again in Japan?

Sales wise, the 360 is a failure in Japan, you really can't argue that. When the company is happy with a sale figure not even reaching the the five digit mark on a weekly basis you know that it isn't a very healthy machine.

Whether the consumer who purchase the machine are happy or not bears no relevance to the 'success' of a console, all the matter is sales and profit and M$ has neither in Japan.

A unsuccessful console doesn't discount it from being a good console. I still think the Dreamcasts was the best piece of hardware last gen.

So I guess that you think Sony are the same in their homeland. Because they are selling 4 figures regularly now. I guess you have missed that the only time 360 hasnt sold well in Japan recently is when there is a stock shortage. They again would likely have had over 20,000 on last weeks numbers, if again they were not sold out in most shops. What the real test will be is when M$ can keep the stores stocked how many a week M$ will sell up to and throughout christmas. I hate to say it mate, but I think M$ can outsell the PS3 in Japan for the rest of the year. As long as they KEEP STOCK.

PS3 is not a success, I don't even think it deserve the market share it currently has. The only thing SCEJ has done so far is flood the PSN with old PS1 games (which I admit is better than SCEE). WKC is a step towards the right direction but if there is nothing after that then its back to square one. Lets hope Sony can pull some white rabbit out of its hat at TGS (ICO I am looking at you!).

With regards to the 360 shortage in Japan, who's fault is it that they ARE short in the first place? MS? Retailers? Distro centre? No matter who is at fault, its still a missed sale oppurtunity. Until they can actually sort it out and achieve those figures you predicted, it's still a failure.

edit:  @DOATS1, I nearly chocked to death from reading your one liner :(

(Thought it was my browser screwing with me heh)

For starters, they could have looked at how other non-Japanese companies have managed to break into the Japanese market. Apple and the Ipod would have been a good place to begin. They should have tried to implement something new that Sony and Nintendo didn't have.

Then again, that's actually above MS because they aren't a very innovative company to begin with. They're used to being able to throw money around and get what they want, but now that MS's only real weapon has proven to be nigh useless, they really don't know what to do with themselves, because for the money they've spent, the most they can hope for is to end up a distant, unprofitable second and just a few million units ahead of the PS3 at best.

All that their money has really bought them is a few new IP's, and some of them have been unmitigated failures as far as sales and notoriety are concerned. Nintendo's first-party wipes the floor with anything MS could ever buy, and the proven third-party IP's that do well in Japan such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Metal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter, etc, have remained on other platforms.

Certainly someone at MS could have devised a better strategy than burning hundreds of millions of dollars to reach meaningless sales marks. It reminds me of a military commander who starts a battle in which 100,00 of his troops die just to gain a few square miles of useless territory.

So what is your actual idea in this post, again? All I see is Microsoft bashing, and very little of what I actually asked. If you were head of Microsoft Japan, what would you do? You offer no solutions, just complaints lodged at Microsoft. Give some actual examples of what Microsoft would/should/could do in Japan to boost sales.

My point was/is, that if you can't answer that, then your really not entitled to bash them if you couldn't come up with a much better idea. 3rd party IP buying isn't the greatest solution, and I agree. Personally, they need to work far more with Mistwalker and build them up to rival SE, since at least Sakaguchi has lots of credibility, and Blue Dragon is a well-known good IP in Japan for the X360.  However, you have to credit the success that Microsoft has had in the past 3 months due to 2 new 3rd party games. They took a very dismal showing in 2008, and made it jump past Microsoft's best performance rather quickly.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Sorry guys. My internet gayed up and posted loads of times. My bad.

That picture doesn't prove that it's sold out in most stores in Japan. Yodobashi is one of the largest household electronics appliance stores in Japan and their online store has all models in stock.

I guess you chose to miss the reports in the thread. *sigh* Most *Gaming* shops have sold out. You will have to go through the thread to determine where last weeks sales discussion took place. Not evrywhere, but most of the major cities are out. Dont try and use Online shops to guage the high street.

Last time I checked Yamada Denki in my city, only the Elite was in stock. People buying new 360s usually find ToV and IU in second hand shops, thus why it's not charting. The 2nd hand industry is HUGE in Japan. You can find games all the way back to Famicom in mint condition still.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
