Forums - Sales - DS sales if the PSP didn't exist??

Well, the DS would probably be up a few million by now, I'd wager. Nothing more than ten million, though; the PSP has carved itself away as a media player, that's why it can sell with little new games out. Of course, those always help, too!

Well then the DS would have 100% market share. Other than that they'd probably have a few more million sales. It would still be as popular as ever.

I don't think it would be too much more. Maybe 5 mil out of the PSP's sales. The two handhelds appeal to two generally different markets. "Hardcore" gamers will likely own both.

At any rate unless Nintendo introduces a new portable soon, the DS will likely become its greatest selling portable ever. As far as the PSP goes, it's Sony's first entry so not too shabby for a first try.

More like the greatest selling game system ever. (surpassing the PS2)

I dont think that the DS would even exist if the PSP wouldent... Nintendo made the DS to be able to compete against Sony in a different way. Going head-to head wouldent have been a good decision, so they opted for something different, and it was a success. IMO if the PSP wouldent have been the market would be still ruled by a Game Boy ;)

I agree? but this is the truth

Not many more... PSP is obviously competing with it like many other entertainment devices and contents are competing between them.
DS success is based around the introduction of new type of software that cater to a wide array of people.
Basically DS is a Blue Ocean product with a really good business model.
I think that DS was brought by what Iwata called , since 2003, the drift gamers phenomenon ( a contraption of the VG market with cost arinsing costantly ) as a counter measure.

Sure the introduction of PSP force Nintendo to release it quickly ( DS path wasn't the definitive DS ) but I don't think that was the mojor motive of DS release.

I think that most people own both a PSP and a DS. Maybe the software sales for the DS will change dramatically but i only see a few more million people owning just one of the two.

Most? There are more than twice as many DS's sold than PSPs. If all 38 million PSP owners were also DS owners, there'd still be 43 million DS-only owners. And I'm pretty sure the percentage of people with multiple gaming systems is really small.  With consoles it's something like 3% or so.

If it wasn't for the PSP, the DS would've been at 90 or 100 million by now, and somehow have even more momentum than it does.

They both definitely expanded the handheld market though. How much did the GBA sell without competition?

Complete misinterpretation of where I was going with that. I was mainly referring to the fact that most people that own a PSP own a DS. I didn't really feel the need to type all of that out but now I know, if I don't then people automatically will miscontrue my statement into me slamming Sony somehow.

Oh oops.  I didn't think you were slamming Sony.  I just thought you went nuts or something.  Sorry about that.

Nope the DS was announced March 03, then revealed at the e3 2003, at the same point as the PSP. Nintendo must have spent a lot of time developing the DS, so it most likely wasnt influenced by the PSP.

Consoles Owned: XBOX 360, Wii, DS and PSP.

Yeah DS was announced the same time as PSP, it's not like the DS magically appeared out of thin air to compete with PSP, and honestly if you really think it was built to compete with the PSP you're way off base. Nintendo was scared that the PSP would destroy the DS so they even had the Game Boy Micro in the wings to sell to push GBA sales in case the PSP beat them, that wasn't the case, and GB Micro failed horribly but it was cause DS was a huge hit.

And if you don't want to believe the truth I'll take away your gaming license =P
