@LCEC,
The approach you're taking of listing the price for console+every peripheral, while valid, still misses the bigger point. Consoles owners don't really need this stuff as a requirement to play at all. Only people who actually want to have 4 people playing simultaneously (on any console) or want HD visuals and 5.1 surround sound (on the HD consoles) will need to spend extra to get it.
Consider this: You are an avid movie goer and their are two private theaters near you that require membership, theaters (A) and (B). Their pricing scheme is as follows:
|
Membership Price
|
Per Visit |
| Theatre |
1 Person |
4 People |
Dues |
| (A) |
$12.80 |
$17.60 |
$1.92 |
| (B) |
$8.00 |
$12.48 |
$1.60 |
Both theaters have a single person and a 4 person membership charge (with 2 and 3 person memberships available if you ask) and the # of people on the membership determines how many people can accompany you into a movie, with 1 person being just yourself. Once you are a member each time you use the account you simply pay the dues (not per person, just once per visit). So, which theater is more expensive to patronize? (Note: Membership price=console price & dues=game prices, prices are in proportion to actual Wii VS PS3 prices)
It should be pretty clear that theater (B) is less expensive. While it might occasionally be the case that (B) doesn't carry a movie you want to see they are in no way more expensive than theater (A) (the same is also true in reverse however), and only in special situations are they even "about as expensive". Specifically that special situation is when you compare the cost of a 1-man account at (A) that has seen only 1 movie compared to a 4-man account at (B) that has also only seen one movie.
To put dgm6780's logic into perspective he is arguing that "because theater (B) shows more movies geared towards groups it requires that you go as a group and thus is about as expensive". He wants you to forget that for a 2 hour movie the group of 4 is getting 8 hours of entertainment value, and he wants you to ignore that the theater still shows a significant number of PG, PG-13, & R rated movies to satisfy all of the other audiences as well.
