Torillian said: Not everyone is choosing WKC based on console, they are picking it based on developer and their history. The trailer is uninformative on the end product's quality true. But Level 5 has done fantastic work for a long time, and that is the reason I am excited for the title. |
Did you think Rogue Galaxy was fantastic work, because I was vastly dissapointed in that game, and the developer. Dragon Quest VIII was also difficulty to love, though I did enjoy it.
However, I also wasn't too big on Layton, though I admit it's great for its genre.
I always feel that people fall for the stigma surrounding Level 5 and how univerally praised they are by the general gaming audience, while I feel that many people are often dissapointed in their games. For instance, despite grand reviews for Dark Cloud 2(which I liked) many people were dissapointed in the monotinous pacing and lack of character development in that game. The same held true for Rogue Galaxy, which might as well have not had a story. It was their last epic jrpg, that failed in the eyes of users.
Level 5 is a great developer. However, they are considering infalliable by the general audience despite several of their games missing the mark, where as other developers, like , Cing, iNiS, the Resident Evil team, Team Ninja, Vanilla Ware, Team Vesperia, Clover Studios(now owned by sega and renamed) are equally talented, but don't recieve the credit they deserve from the community at large.
Other developers can blow them off the map in consistancy, including most of the first party Nintendo and Sony studios.
It's like people ignore Level 5's rare less than stellar games, because they didn't play them, so they don't exist.
If you loved all of their "just ok" games, then yeah, you should be head over heels for WKC. If you think that a Level 5 game is gonna have much in common with other jrpgs, and it's just a more epic version, you're wrong, that's not gonna happen. WKC will be many things, and great is one of them. However, it almost certainly will not be what you expect, and in that sense, I imagine it will dissapoint a lot of people, and surprise a few as well(including reviewers, who love Level 5's mix of traditional style and modern conventions).
As you can see, I'm not half-assing my point on this one. I think it's fair, and I think the game will be great, but I think it's a mistake overhyping it just as it is with any game, and giving is prestige because of its developer isn't a free pass to hype this game to hell and back. It's like me saying that it's ok to assume Wii Music will be the best music game released so far this gen because it's made by Nintendo. There has already been several amazing jrpgs this gen, and one or two has even appeared on the HD consoles already. The trailer for WKC looks good. The game is gonna kick ass. However, overhyping it is bad for the game, and bad for you, unless you like being dissapointed by an 8.5/10 game.
I, personally prefer getting excited when my games get 8.5/10. Not hyping them, allows for this to take place. Thinking 8.5 is a crappy score, is a sure fire sign that you're an internet perfectionist, and overhypes their games and then goes on rants about how much they suck when they are only great, and not the best game ever.
For instance, if Mirror's Edge, a game I'm anticipating, is an 8.5 game and shares similar traits with the first game, I'll be happy.
If LBP is of similar quality, how do you think Sony fans would feel about that?
Both are games. Both create fun. However, if they are both 8.5s, I would be happy with my game, but several Sony fans on this website would shoot themselves in the head. Because when you overhype a game, an 8.5 is a failure. A surprise 8.5 is a treat. The more you hype, the higher the scores and quality need to be, for the game not to be considered sucky.
That's why I keep telling you all, all the time, stop hyping R2, stop hyping ever PS3 game down the pike. You are hurting the games. Reviewers hear the hype too. It hurts a games score. It hurts a games perception, sales, and it also hurts your enjoyment of the game.
