Forums - Sales - The effects of the economy on the videogame market

Well this weeks hardware NA hardware numbers are out and every single console did subpar

DS 114k
Wii 99k
360 71k
PSP 45k
PS3 43.5k

One week isn't enough data to draw any conclusions but I think it's safe to say that America's economic woe's have to some extent affected console sales although overall sales are still holding up relatively well.

These next few weeks will be very telling in assesing the average consumers mindset on the economy and the value of entertainment

Hardware sales were pretty low but I am also of the view that one week isn't enough time to formulate any conclusions. It could simply be the result of people forgoing video game purchases as they anxiously await a bail out deal to be made. This isn't the only industry to witness decline in the US.

true once the bailout deal is made maybe consumer confidence will go up. I'm pretty sure christmas sales are going to be very good although probably not as good as last years

Well, the thing is, videogames are a global biz, and global biz seems to be doing fine. Yes, some Eurobanks got clobbered, but the EU banking system is heavily regulated and basically sound. The rest of the world is still booming -- India, China and Russia are growing like mad. And here in the US, gaming is still affordable - handhelds will boom, sales of the PS2 and Wii should get one final boost from cash-short consumers who want a world-class gaming experience, and cell gaming is taking off.

That said... it's true the US economy is hitting a wall. I know many VGChartz posters aren't from the US and may not realize just how bad things are getting here, but let me tell you, this is NOT some minor recession. The US has endured thirty years of Wall Street greed, titanic income polarization (superrich getting richer, middle class getting squeezed), and a massive housing bubble, all financed by behemoth current account deficits. Basically, the US borrowed tons of money from China, Russia and other creditors, and bought a bunch of houses with it, which is crazy. Making matters even worse, instead of investing in education and science, we spend one trillion dollars every year on warfare. (Not a typo. The real amount.) This is insane -- and unsustainable. Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 gave us the warning: stop this Guns of the Patriots madness, or else your whole society will go down the drain.

Bottom line: unless the US puts away the guns and fixes its internal problems, the center of the videogame industry is going to shift to Europe (including Russia), and East Asia (including China) -- regions of the world which managed their economies better, which have public broadband, and whose currencies are backed by economies which rely on factories and civilian investment, not bogus bubbles and wasteful military-industrial crony capitalism.

^Excellent summary of our financial situation. I bet I know who you're voting for...

In the past wars have helped America's economy greatly, look at what
World War I did for the economy after the great depression. However the economic model based off sustained war is extremely unstable and leaves the world in a volatile state.

The money built off contracting in Iraq is massive, however this money has not found its way back into the American economy for whatever reason.
Couple that with the fact that America borrows massive amounts of money from China then uses that same money to buy Chinese goods and you see how ludacris and foolish our economic system is.

Although I disagree with you Slorgnet that regions like China can become big game consumers. Not because they wont buy the hardware but because companies won't be able to sell any significant amounts of software due to the massive pirating and the governments lack of crackdowns on such pirating.

Well with what just happened on Wall Street today I think it would be foolish to believe any industry isn't going to take a hit.

Oh and DMiesterJ what was that you were saying about Ipods, Apple stocks just fell massively today...

I just read on BBC news

something horrible happened to the economy today :(

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

yea I think it's undeniable at this point that the very fundamentals of the American economy are about to change, we just have to see how thats going to effect console sales.

I'm not as optimistic about console sales as some other people in this thread. Lets wait and see how this week pans out for sales though, I don't think its going to be pretty...
