Forums - Nintendo - Wiiconnect24 overheating and damaging Wii GPU

I always keep my Wii on Wiiconnect24, I've only had it connected for a week though but sometimes when I leave a program to go to the menu-during that sequence I see alot of red pixels flustering around the screen, it's a little worrying.

Eh... you might want try some darker environment game and what not to see if anything's wrong...

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

1 word: RTFA

I can't understand the rationale behind the way this mode works. Is there any statement from Nintendo as to if/when this will be fixed?

This was reported months ago, and is a real issue. However, there is a secondary reason for causing this (its standby mode that does it AFAIK - not WiiConnect):

This ONLY happens to people who regularly leave their Wii on standby for days WITHOUT turning it on. Turning it on, kicks in the fan and cools everything down. (I would imagine Kwaads Wii is toast by now - considering how rarely he uses it...;).

My Wii is always on standby mode, and always has WiiConnect on - and has from the day I bought it. No ill effects.

Should also be noted that I am sure Nintendo has already identified and fixed the problem (maybe a shift of components on the MB, or a extra heatsink or something). It has not become a major enough issue for them to talk about it publicly.

Well if the thing gets to hot in "Connect 24 State" there would be a simple fix: Let the fan run sometimes (1 minutes every hour). Basicly should be fixable per firmwareupdate if it is realy a big problem.

From an absolutely safety perspective the correct fix would be to let the fan work exactly the same way it works in other situations... ie kicking into action whenever necessary to cool down the components. I would hope this is possible and that that's the way it will get fixed.

Sorry for your Wii, takkxyz, luckily this doesn't seem to have affected so many people as the Red Circle of Death thing. Or maybe that's because it was detected and fixed earlier.

I left my own Wii in standby mode for a few weeks after I got it. Although the temperature in my country is quite high (25-30C) I didn't get any problem. However after reading about the PS3 high power consumption I wondered about the Wii and found this neat little article:
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm

After which I decided to turn off the standby mode, since it's boosting the console's power consumption quite a bit and it's pretty useless anyway. So I'm doing my part in saving the planet from global warming at the same time

This was my first post, btw, nice web site ^^

Yeah, I got it DAMN hot sometimes. But I leave my Wii vertical, and I make sure I see a red-light when I turn it off.

DO NOT leave a PS3/360 in a enclosed area. It's plain STUPID. You will smoke them.

Do NOT put a Wii horizontal.

do NOT run WiiConnect24. You have to hold the button to turn it off. WiiConnect requires standby mode be the 'default' off. I find that a major pain in my ASS becuase most everything requires it be on, but I know I'll smoke it if I do. Bleh. Garbage.

Also, if you can hear your PS3 from more than 6 feet away without haveing to 'think' about the sound, you should invest in moveing the PS3 to a place it will get better air-flow.

There is no need to press anything. The Wii Settings allows you to turn the Wii OFF completely by using the remote (instead of powering down to standby mode, it will power down to OFF).

Not sure about using it horizontally. Mine is always vertical, and always in that little stand it comes with.

I'll be interested to see how it works over Xmas, when the temp hits the roof again (we regularly get temps over 40 deg C, for days at end at the hottest part of the year). No issues yet.
