Forums - Nintendo - Is "spastic" really that offensive in the UK?

Linky: http://blog.hahauk.com/2007/07/another-day-another-nintendo-recall.html

Another day, another Nintendo recall

You may remember the DS game that was recalled a few weeks back because of an 'offensive' name that it tagged players who got a score of 0, well it seems that Nintendo really like the word 'spastic' and have included it in the not-so-good Wii game, Mario Party 8. As such, the game has also been recalled.

This is getting a tad out of hand, recalling games because of one word. But that's censorship for you.

Press Release:

The above game was launched in the UK today. Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error. We have therefore decided to recall all copies of the game from UK retailers so that this mistake can be corrected.

We will re-launch Mario Party 8 in the UK as soon as possible and will announce a new launch date shortly. We very much regret any inconvenience caused.

Yeah, although we are generally more laid back on swearing, sex and violence, we seem to have real problems with the words 'spastic' and 'retard'.

Moreso than any other prejudice comment.

There used to be a charity called the Spastic Society in the UK, helping people suffering from
cerebral palsy. However playgrounds were full of children running round calling each other spastics when they did something stupid. It became an insult and the charity had to change its name. Partially because kids found out about the charity's name and thought it was hilarious.

It's basically like the game calling you a retard or saying "Why are you so crap, are you disabled?". They could get away with it but it's very bad PR.

I think it's absolutely pathetic people would get upset over it.

what if you were disabled and you were playing it, and then the game called you a spastic, how would you feel about that? i can easily see how people would get upset about this.

I think spastic is vastly different than retard...it's not correct at all to use retard in the US...or probably anywhere.

I never knew spastic referred to an actual condition...I thought it meant quick and jerky, something like that...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
