Forums - Nintendo - Virtual Console and WiiWare

So far, I think it's been great.  We have 255 titles on the Virtual Console and another 31 games already for WiiWare in just over four months since it's North American debut. There have definitely been some clunker titles and those just to make a quick buck on both the VC and WW but there have also been many great classics and new favorites. What I'm curious about is how many people are actually using the service or are familiar with it. I know many on here use it but most of us are "gamers" who try to get the most out of their system(s). How many casual fans and part time gamers are using it.

I think something Nintendo should try doing to get more people interested in it or at least trying it is to give free VC points for doing things like buying new games or subscribing to their magazine, etc. If and when Nintendo releases the new Star Fox or F-Zero, they could package a card for downloading the earlier game or games for free. It would be an incentive to buy the new game as well as getting many first time customers to the VC. Once they see it and use it, maybe they would become interested in using it again in the future. It would mean more money for Nintendo no matter what but also could greatly increase the sales of VC/WW games. This would lead to more games, especially on WiiWare if more developers sign on.

I also would like to see more real games on WiiWare. There have been a few but many of the others have been simulations like the recent fish tank game or games that were modified from being a cell phone game. Others just seem like very small minigames. I'd love to see more stuff like Megaman 9 and other types of real sit down and play games for WiiWare. This is where some smaller publishers could really shine by showing their stuff. And as I mentioned above, if Nintendo brings more users to the service, it could mean a lot more money and thus opening the door of oppertunity for all involved.

Any opinions?

I have to say that I love the VC/WiiWare. Just downloaded MegaMan 9, and last week Super Mario RPG. I've had to delete about 10 games off of my wii so far to make room for the new ones (still have to beat MegaMan & MegaMan2 but I have full time school and a full time job :)

I seem to remember when Metroid Prime 3 came out they released Metroid for the NES (or Super Metroid can't remember which, i've downloaded the NES one) and a video from the game. I thougt that was awesome.

If Star Fox Wii came with a 1000 point Wii Points Card that would be awesome, I would get it and Star Fox 64 in a heart beat.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I am still waiting on an Earthbound release for VC, otherwise I will just have my SNES hooked up anyways and my n64 for Excite Bike 64.

I much enjoy both WiiWare and Virtual Console, though the latter more than the former as I completely missed the 16-bit era of consoles. The monthly Strong Bad installments ensure regular WiiWare downloads from me (and yeah, I could get them on PC, but I don't like Steam at all).

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Virtual Console is one of the best features the Wii has. I have tons of games for it and tons more I hope will someday be released on it. The friends I have who are 360 and PS3 owners are often attracted by this feature as well as a lot of them have an interest in these old games that they no longer have. If the Wii gets cheaper or gets enough games for these types of gamers that more of them buy in I think that will add at least a few more VC sales. As it is though if a lot of the Wii buyers are former PS1 and PS2 sales then most of these VC titles mean less to them than they do to long term gamers.

I think both are great additions to the wii...i have 15 VC games and 2 wiiware, and i want to download Mega man 9 but i dont think i have space for it

I think the reason they are not adding games faster is because they were to short sighted and didn't put enough memory on board. A friend of mine claims to be able to play games off of an SD card, even though I don't think you are supposed to, but I think when they get the storage situation figured out they will add games at a faster pace.

I think that is holding back WiiWare also. I am surprised that Nintendo hasn't figured out a memory solution or if they have, why they haven't announced it yet and have a release coming. We could then see even bigger WiiWare games.

I'm curious if anyone knows. What is the theroretical limit on a WW game? Can a WW game be as big and look as good as an actual Wii disc based game if there is the memory to support it? Or would an N64 size and graphics wise be about the limit?

I have only 8 games for the VC, and i'm waiting for Killer Instinct, Super MArio Kart and Yoshi's Island.

Meanwhile, i dont like any WiiWare game. Wario SD should been relased on Wii Ware and not in disk format.

Yeah, Wii's memory limit is definitely holding it back. I've run out of free space, and I only have 4 Wiiware games and 6 VC games. Transfering to SD is too slow to be of any use, so I will start deleting games, if I want to download anything new in the future. As for the size limit, I've read somewhere it's around 43MB.
