Forums - Sales - LittleBigPlanet vs. Wii Music: Battle of the Casuals

Just ask youself why it sells better and you will get the answer (hint: it reaches a new, broader audience -- that has no clue of the difference between a good game and a bad game).

Fixed for accuracy.

33.) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas (PS3) (85.062)
34.) Super Paper Mario (Wii) (85.018)

Well at any rate, I think you can see how poorly this comparison is going for the Wii by this point with 24 of the top 34 games for each system being PS3 games while only 10 are Wii games.

At any rate there are another 20 Wii Games and 44 PS3 games to go before we get down to Wii Sports and its Game Rankings score of 76.562. Including Heavenly Sword which has a quite respectable review score of 80.659 by comparison. There are 23 PS3 games with scores between those of Super Paper Mario and Heavenly Sword and only 7 Wii games in that range.

There are 12 Wii Games and 20 PS3 games that come between Heavenly Sword and Wii Sports with a Game Rankings score of 76.562. It seems like the only thing that you were right about is that Wii Sports has a higher score than Folklore which only has a Game Rankings score of 75.825. There are no Wii Games and 3 PS3 games that have a Game Rankings score between Wii Sports and Folklore.

To put it bluntly, anyone can see from these numbers that the PS3 simply decimates the Wii as far as the number of high quality games for each system goes and that the Wii simply does not deserve to be selling in the numbers that it does.

In conclusion, according to Game Rankings there are 75 PS3 games with a Game Rankings score between 75 and 97.419 (Grand Theft Auto IV the PS3 version which is the highest rated game of this console generation beating out the 360 version by .778 of a point) while there are only 36 Wii games in this range.

Myabe you can't count, or maybe you just weren't taught well in school. The Gamecube version is higher on gamerankings, not the PS2. It also happens to have nearly twice as many reviews as the PS2 version. Sony fanboyism at its finest.

Well, let's look at that a bit more deeply shall we.

Grand Theft Auto IV is also on 360.  However, it is the PS3 version that is the highest rated game of this console generation.

The Orange Box  (PC version's Game Rankings score = 96.306.  It is the definitive version.)(Also, a patch was released for the PS3 version sometime ago that improves the game from its original version that only received an 88.584.  I don't know how much it improves the PS3 version scorewise, but it is supposed to significantly improve the PS3 version.)

You came up with ten multiconsole games on that list where the 360 versions  have higher Game Rankings' scores than the PS3 version.

Let's see if I can do the same:

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) = 97.419 > Grand Theft Auto IV (360) = 96.641.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3) = 86.655 > Ninja Gaiden 2 (360) = 82.057.

Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3) = 86.564 > Unreal Tournament 3 (360) = 82.525.

GRID (PS3) = 86.424 > GRID (360) = 86.163.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (PS3) = 86.387 > Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (360) = 86.057.

Madden NFL 09 (PS3) = 86.288 > Madden NFL 09 (360) = 85.779.

NHL 08 (PS3) = 85.904 > NHL 08 (360) = 84.993

Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (PS3) = 85.090 > Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (360) = 84.827

Looks like you actually got me.  Only 8 of the multiconsole games on that list on PS3 scored higher than on the 360 in comparison to 10 multiconsole games scoring higher on the 360 than on the PS3.  However I did demonstrate two things here.

1.)  GTA IV is better on the PS3 than on the 360.  the only reason to buy the 360 version is for the DLC.  However, as LA Noire recently going cross platform shows and with the PS3 version of GTA IV selling so much better than the 360 version in Europe and Japan, then one can expect that same dlc to also be making its way to the PS3 version of GTA IV in some form.

2.)  Most 360 fans say that multi-console games are always better on the 360.  Well 8 versus 10 doesn't equal always.  And the more recent games on the list demonstrate a trend in which the PS3 versions of multi-console games have in fact been better than the 360 versions.  For example, Grand Theft Auto IV, Madden NFL 09, GRID, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Unreal Tournament 3 (to be honest, I was surprised that Warfighter 2 and UT3 are better on PS3; however, I guess that being able to play these games for free online offsets a bit of the advantage that Live gives with achievements when you consider that you also have to pay $50.00 a year to play games on Live.) and Devil May Cry 4 [DMC 4 (PS3) = 84.057 > DMC 4 (360) = 83.914 narrowing the margin to 9 to 10 which will be altered to 10 to 10 by Eternal Sonata with more on the way like Rage, New Prince of Persia, Mirror's Edge, and Final Fantasy XIII all of which should add to the total number of PS3 multiconsole games that are better than their 360 counterparts ] have all been better on the PS3.

Fixed for more completeness.

What makes you think Sony won't advertise this to the casual market? They have already invested in marketing for LBP and I'm guessing as we get closer to release LBP will have comercials. Sony is also looking to make Sackboy their mascot if the game gets good reviews.

It doesn't work like that, but first, let's back up.

First thing is stop using the word casual. What everyone is saying and meaning are very different things. Casual describes gamers who play lower-mid games, but more so as a small hobby. This may be someone who only plays for ~2 hours a day and plays games like Guitar Hero and Halo. What everyone means is non-gamers. These are people who do not play videos games, but it can also describe someone who just recently was introduced to games. These people play mainly low tier titles.

Now, the two games are in totally different leauge. Wii Music is not causal, but for non-gamers. This is why it is so easy and you can't mess up. It's just for the fun of playing an instrument. LBP is an upmarket game. What people forget is this: the game is about sharing (sending and receiving stages) which is definatly not for non-gamers. Heck, online in general is something that non-gamers won't like. "But what about Mario Kart Wii" you say. Mario Kart Wii wasn't totally focused on online. LBP requires it. In order to playb the real game, you need to be able to send and receive these stages. Now, while there is a main game, it still may not be a bridge. There comes into question the controlls (for instant, if there are too many items to menipulate like the jet pack, it might scare bridge gamers away), and how hard the levels may be (if memory servers, the developers boosted on the length and difficulty of some levels).

Now, the problem with you argument is that the PS3 is not at a mass amrket price. It is too expensive to reach the audience you think it is suppose to reach. Advertising it as a "bridge game" would be dumb. There isn't even anything to bridge on the PS3, so what's the good of making a game that casual, hardcore and non-gamers all like if the latter doesn't have the console.

In conclusion, LBP is not the bridge game people hope it will be. It wasn't designed with that in mind. When you first saw they game, did you think "Wow, my mom might actually like this"?. No, becuase you were focusing on the trading, graphics, and physics. These are the bread and butter of this title. It was never meant to be a bridge game. Someone thought that Sockboy might appeal in the same way other mascots have.

LBP does not require online. Stop stating that lie. It is a strong component of the game but one that can be completely ignored just like in MKWii. The focus of the game is sharing. Online is a major conponent, unlike other bridge games.

There are two buttons needed to play the game, jump(X) and hold things(R1 which i believe activates the jetpack).

As stated before the infinite respawn with plentiful checkpoints make it more accesable than NSMB and it's limited life based system. Dpes not work like that. Infinate lives and checkpoints mean nothing is the game is too frustrating. In fact, that may sollitify that the game is hard. NSMB was never incredibly difficult, thus, the lives. Infinate lives makes me think that this game is going to be hard in terms of level design. That will make all the difference.

Bridge games don't recieve any special type of advertising as far as i'm aware. All the earlier titles you mentioned as bridge games didn't get special bridge game advertising. It was a responce to someone who said the game would be advertised to non-gamers (or "casuals")

If you never make a game that they can enjoy then they will never see a reason to own your console. Nintendo was simply smart enough to sell the game with the system from the start so the reason was quite obvious.

PS3 isn't a mass market price. It will get there just as the 360 did. It would be nice to already have a library of interesting games for those who finally do decide to pick up the system when it is finally at that pricepoint instead of getting to that point and then slowly starting to release the games. Especially if casual and hardcore players will enjoy them in the meanwhile. The 360 isn't a mass market price either. It is still $350. Of course you can get one for $250, it is still going to confuse the hell out of customers (becuase there are 5 or 6 versions of the same exact thing).

Neither system has been mass makret. Evenm with the price, there are too many models and too few mass market games on the systems. They are high end gaming machines for high end gamers.

Ps. the first videos I saw focused on multiplayer. 2d platformer with multiplayer piqued my interest. Finding out about the creation and sharing is what drove me over the edge enough to want a PS3 now.

comments in bold.

You guys are arguing over the dumbest shit I've ever seen. You're arguing over .7% of a difference on a game that doesn't deserve all the high scores it got in the first place. Which makes me sad because I own it.

All I see is, "Wah wah, my console of choice isn't selling as good as the Wii."

LBP is doomed!

Wii Music will obliterate it!
