You wouldn't give it anything over an 8..?
I do agree that it isn't 'groundbreaking', but it's so good because it gets everything 'right'. Which is why I like GoW too.

It is an incredibly good game, but there was nothing UNIQUE about it.
The way I see it, it is a very good FPS with disappointing graphics (MGS4 spoils you) and great action, but nothing to really distinguish it from the pack other than the fct that everything works so well.
No destructible environments, no ripping turrets out of the ground, no blasting your opponent into a thousand pieces with a rocket launcher. (Bad Company, Halo 3 and UT3)
The multiplayer is incredible, but not very new player-friendly, like Halo with its automatching.
Also the singleplayer campaign is FAR too short with no real replay value.
In my opinion, it's an 8.5. But that's just me- prefer a good action adventure to an FPS any day...
The online multiplayer is immense. The level design is just unbelievably well done

Clearly someone is still bitter that CoD4 never made it to the Wii. (kidding)
I think it's a great game, definitely one of the most addictive online experiences. What I like about it is that it does everything right, it doesn't do it the best in every department, nor are there many new additions (if any) to the genre, but it does EVERYTHING right.
Sort of how GTA4 is so loved because it's just GTA3 with a much more likeable hero and tonnes of polish.
But the reason why I love it:
Infinity Ward knew people were getting sick of WWII, so they took it to modern day. Not many, and definitely not enough developers take these sorts of risks.
It is not. Its the best FPS.
No other FPS has this immersion and almost perfect controls. No other FPS gives you this feeling of being in the midst of a war.
They set the bar for online multiplayer. Even Bungie said that they were taking notes from the online and experience models of COD4. IW made their game stand out on two systems with many FPS games. It's very well made and will be remembered as one of the best PS360 games.

If anyone asks what am I saying... Go look at erikers post... This is pointles...
The AI is pre planned in SP,The game has slightly improved COD2 graphics with AA and everyone nutts all over it and says it has awesome "grafics"!even with no physics and brick bushes.
The MP is COD2 with modern warefare modification, the only ground breaking thing is the power is shooting thru walls,This its self set the standard for all FPS.
Im glad they didnt dumb the game down by making a Wii version.
After week 1 of playing it and unlocking every weapon i found asking my self "Why am i playing this again?"
Well, I think its a little overrated the way I thought Halo 1 was somewhat overrated.
It's very good, its polished but as a pure FPS there has been better before on PC and there probably will always be... see I always end up comparing the best console FPS (and despite appearing on PC this is really a console FPS in many ways) and feeling they are a little behind the best on that platform.
On consoles it is very sweet vs other FPS but I do think console FPS tend to invoke excessive gushing in reviewers these days - ever since Halo launched I keep getting the feeling that reviewers are still amazed FPS can be good on consoles and provide strong MP, but maybe that's just me.
My own main issues with it are:
1) the graphics are nowhere near as good as made out - its pretty easy in most levels to get somewhere that allows you to see all the seams and its also clear where compromises where made to get decent FPS rates were made for consoles
2) the engine isn't actually that great compared to say CryEngine and suffers from issues often criticized in other console FPS - i.e. most stuff is actually bolted down, physics is actually carefully minimized, etc. I mean in COD4 I can shoot a cup and it stays stuck to the table while in Crysis I can realistically shoot/move just about everything
3) the SP campaign is still too short and fragmented - it's good, and great as an experience, but not up to great SP campaigns really (although to be fair the game design is more about giving sensation of battle than a true story narrative)
However it is a very good FPS and very well polished for what it is and the MP is really well done.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
Because it is so incredibly awesome!!!
The SP campaign is really good, very intense, great story with only about 2 low points
The MP is my favourite MP in any game, and I much prefer SP in general, but it was just so damm addictive
