Forums - Gaming - Is history repeating itself? (Casual Gamers)

I stand by my "The Wii is the DS" statement. It will likely be even more successful from a hardcore gaming standpoint, as early Wii game sales have been much better than early DS sales, and early 3rd party support and 1st party hardcore games have been much better than the DS.

The weight loss industry in North America is much bigger than the videogame industry (*The weight loss industry pulls in 30 billion a year in the U.S. alone). So of course Wii Fit is going to be huge. Nintendo tried it before with the NES but the technology wasn't ready but this time around I think they nailed it. Still though the reason it's 30 billion is because those people try so many different things and it'll be interesting to see how many actually stay with the system for the long haul.

No this time, the console is actually focusing on non gamers and trying to get them to buy stuff. E3 showed that Nintendo's focus is not for traditional gamers anymore. There was one announcement of a traditional game and the whole rest of the conference was about the casuals and the success with that.

Also where is the 3rd party support? I thought there was going to be a flood of 3rd parties supporting the Wii now that it's selling the most. Yet every third party thing that I've heard so far I already knew and a lot of them are either smaller games or casual games as well

No, most of the games they showed were "hardcore". Not only from them, but from 3rd party as well.

And the Wii has the biggest list of 3rd party exclusives so far -with the great majority being "hardcore" games.

Most of them being mediocre games and licensed stuff. Don't even start telling me the Wii is getting better 3rd party games than the 360 or the PS3.

Also I can see WiiFit selling, but does it really bring anything new to people? It's not like Wii Sports where you are simulating playing actual sports in motion which was totally original and unheard of before. Do you really need the Wii to exercise on a mat? not really....

I don't think it will be as successful as the Wii Sports phenomenon and I think they should have gone with separate Wii Sports version that go deeper into each sport and focused on that. As in Wii Baseball as a full game, Wii Tennis as a full depper game.

WiiFit is only an excuse for people to exercise, it doesn't make the Wii any funner. Wii Sports does that.

Did you played all those games already ? For what we know, SC legends may be better than SC 4 and RE UC may be better than RE 5. Zack and Wiki looks great (exclusive). Same with No more heroes. Same with DQ:Swords. Same with deweys adventure. Same with boogie. Same with Nights. Actually, after the big 3 of nintendo most of the must-have games for the rest of the year will be 3rd party.

And The people that played Wii fit after nintendo's conference are saying that is pretty fun and with well-made mini games. But i guess you already spent plenty of time with the board to say that it wont be "any funner".

I disagree. I think WiiFit is a brilliant move. Think about how health crazed the Japanese people are. Now imagine with their limited space that they could get a fairly decent workout in their own homes and have fun while doing it. This game could sell millions in Japan alone. Any sales in the US or Europe would just be added frosting on the cake. This game is right in the same vains as the Brain Training series and could potentially be a system selling game.

True, the game should be a hit in Japan. It's the type of game that the Japanese will eat up.

I just don't see it having longterm success in the west. I should have clarified what region I was talking about.

I think someday the casual market could become saturated and pull back. Business moves in cycles so it should come as no surprise to anyone. But I don't think we're even a teeny tiny way there yet. We're at the beginning of the cycle, not the end.

By the time saturation occurs, Nintendo could have more money than god allowing them to move wherever they need to.

Yep. The middle chunk of their presentation was about appealing to core gamers. Honestly, just giving the dates for Metroid, Mario and Smash, all within 3.5 months, should have been enough to satisfy core gamers. By tossing in the WiiZapper for RE:UC, demo play of Metroid and Zelda PH, and finally announce MK Wii by May that really should have put down grumbling.

And I think many missed or misread some of the presentation - they are trying to get games that can bring the new casual gamer and classic core gamer together in a satisfactory way, and MK is a prime tool. MK has never been a hard game to learn, but it has always appealed to core gamers. The more the new casual gamer can get hooked into such titles, the less casual they will become.

i remember reading about some study shown. back in the earlier generation, there was more focus in upbringing a child, and less attention on things like gaming. nowadays, the kids who were brought up with constant new toys are adults now and can afford to buy the things they like and support their hobbies. nowadays, 20-40 year olds, even with kids, are still attached to the video games cuz it grew up with them. just like how peopel say anime is not just for kids.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

I have to disagree. IMHO these think will sale, BIG TIME. Why? Well, yes, its not a "real game". But do you know how many people pay for thinks like that? Do you know how much people (more precisely woman) spend on things like that? I' m sure you don't even sweat doing the shown exercises. But i bet, other will. (Hell i would!)

I'm sure it will be a hit for a few weeks while Self, Us Weekly, and every other nauseating magazine my wife reads play up the virtues of the mat in articles, reviews, etc.

Once everyone realizes that it's actually terrible for exercising, they'll move on to something that will actually help them get into shape and lose weight.

Clearly you have no idea how the weight loss industry works. No one EVER moves on to something that will actually help them get into shape and lose weight. They just move to the next fad.

I don't think there is much of a similarity. Was there such a thing as a "gamer" back in the days of the Atari2600 or even the NES? The videogame market at the time was just at its infancy and I think for the most part, Atari and Nintendo were marketing to kids while catching the eyes of the curious. Videogames in general were coonsidered a novelty at that time.

Now, videogame purchases can be segmented into the type of "gamer" and videogame makers can now market to a particular segent of the "gamer" population.

The beauty of the Wii is that it is attracting new gamers, some may choose to continue gaming and some may not. That happens with all consoles, people will be curious and buy a system and then go from there. Not all the of the PS2 owners are hardcore gamers. Not all of them own MGS3, GTA3 or GT3.

I don't understand where this fear of companies stopping development of core gaming genres. The core gamers will always be there and companies will have to cater to them. Not everyone is going to buy Brain Training. However, companies cannot afford to let this opportunity to capture new customers pass them by. They can't ignore the masses. Just better graphics isn't going to cut it any more.

Maybe the novelty of awesome graphics has worn off?
