We all have a magnetic spot somewhere in our forehead (you can try it out with a nickle!) so you could bring the rods to your forehead to test them out.

could try tying a string around each pole and spinning them to see if they align with the earth's magnetic poles. Should work like a lodestone from back in the day. The one that consistently ends up in the same orientation is the magnetic rod.
