Just for my arguement, here is the total Madden 08 sales
That totals to 7.21m as you say, now PES 2008
The sales here total to 7.77m, so PES on its own beats madden, now FIFA
That totals to 8.17, so I think we can confidently say real football wins
Also it is interesting to note that PES and FIFA PS3 versions outsold 360 versions

That's not interesting imo. Interesting would be x360 version outselling ps3 version.

This time last year PS3 install bases were much lower that 360 WW, the PS3 had only been out in EU 7 months before PES came, and still it outsold the 360 version (as was the same with AC)

That's true. If you look at the launches, PES 2008 and Fifa 08 sold more first week on the PS3 in PAL than the 360, despite it having a smaller userbase in PAL, and even Europe. I think that a big reason for those games selling better on the PS3 in PAL (AC included) is that the PS3 was getting a lot of new buyers who were more enthusiastic about buying games than there senior owner counterparts who likely already had several games in their stocks. And a lot of people could tell you that Pro Evo and Fifa (to a lesser extent) are incredibly popular in southern European countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal), where the PS3 is quite popular. So demographics have a lot to do with it. Not only that, but those franchises were incredibly popular on the PS2, which brings me to my next point.
A lot of it is brand name, since sports series like Madden were very popular on the PS2, and thus are bound to do well on its successor. However, I think it really boils down to userbase saturation, demographics, and a console's community. The PS3 version of Madden 09 wasn't considered inferior to other versions like its ancestor one year past, and the PS3's young male demographics fits very well to the sports market. Just look at how NBA Live stacked up to its 360 brother despite a far smaller userbase for the PS3 in the states, and don't even get me started on soccer/football games. Not only that, but as the 360 library expands further, the majority of Xbox 1 owners have a 360, and the demographics expand with big games and price drops, the attach rate will drop. Not every new 360 owner will just want to play Madden and Call of Duty 4. Many will want to play games on Xbox Live, RPGs, or maybe even casual games that they thought looked interesting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Madden NFL 09 did even worse than 08 on the 360 despite a dramatic increase in userbase. This shows that either 360 owners are burnt out on Madden (they've had 4 so far), the Madden style userbase is getting maxed out, or they're just completely lost and vanished from the face of the earth.
Nice to see you support the PS3 Mr. Lucas, and I'm glad to see you back.
