Being in the UK I have little interest in "The Washington Post". On the BBCs Technology news section, they have articles on the PSP redesign, and the imminent release of the 360 Elite, nothing about WiiFit, so meh...

I like the conclusion :

"It's a little early in this race to declare a winner or a loser," he said. "All it takes is one compelling title."

Wii Sports will probably be responsible for at least 10 million Wii sales even before Wii Fit comes out. If Wii Fit is able to somehow match that, those will be 20 million in the first couple of years of the console, from 2 games alone.

Add to that the consoles that the Remote alone sold, and those that the Balance Board (available separately, and usable by other games) will without a doubt sell, and it's not hard to see the environment created around these two games (coupled with Wii Play) being more or less resposible for selling some 40 million consoles by early 2009.

Like it or not, this announcement alone cements the Wii as a 40 million units "fad", and that does make a console.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

One title really doesn't matter ...

The N64 had Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: OoT and Goldeneye 64 three titles which defined genres and are considered some of the most important games ever created; the Gamecube had Resident Evil 4, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime all of which were considered some of the best games in the generation; even the XBox had the Halo series which is one of the best 'system selling' series I have ever seen.

The Playstation and PS2 dominated because they had boatloads of crap released for them ...

  • Want a Spongebob game for your Nephew, odds are it is on the PS2
  • Want a awful game show tie-in product, odds are it is on the PS2
  • Want an unusual puzzle game, odds are it is on the PS2
  • Want a dating simulation, odds are it is on the PS2

... Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest enabled the PS2 to sell 30+ Million consoles; the awful games no one will ever thinks of as being important allowed the PS2 to break 120+ Million consoles sold.
