Forums - Gaming - Capcom to produce multiplatform games only.

With the hardware market fiercely divided and videogame budgets swelling into the hundreds of millions, many publishers have been focussing on multiplatform development to maximise sales. Few, however, have done so as baldly as Capcom.

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's fiscal year 2008 shareholder report.

Many future projects, the report goes on, will be developed using the company's in-house MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms." The idea is to "to increase revenue and dramatically increase the number of users by launching, for example, Resident Evil 5 ... Street Fighter IV ... and Bionic Commando [on multiple platforms]."

Capcom has taken steps to reassure predictably infuriated console loyalists. "I think the materials pretty much speak for themselves and we’re continuing to support all consoles with appropriate content,” commented Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning.

“It just means things that in the past would have been timed exclusives to a single platform will no longer be exclusive to a single platform. It’s just better business decisions at play."

"I don’t think fans have anything to worry about," Svnesson breezed. "That said, I know nothing I say will keep people from freaking out, screaming ‘the sky is falling, OMG!’ So feel free to carry on assuming the worst. I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you do so."

Maybe Monster hunter 3 will come to ps3 or 360 and Resident evil 5 and Street fighter 4 to Wii.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

more and more third party devs will follow this trend.
especially for bigger companies that release multiple games its a good investment to build one multiplat gameengine and reuse it in multiple games which you can sell to ps3, xbox 360 and PC.
yes initial expenses for developing a multiplat engine are higher, but when the engine is running you can reuse it and build all following games rather cheap for all platforms. also with the hd market split with no clear winner, you would loose out on nearly 50% of the potential customers if you go exculsive to one console.

but it will have some disadvantages for the customers since these engines will probably never be able to push each console to the absolute maximum, since the more you specialise on the strengths of the console the more you have to change when porting to the other. (which would mean increased dev costs again).

crossplat between hd consoles and wii is still be another stoy, and i don't see it happen more often than it does now.
the wii has a lot less power in the hardware, add to that the fact that simple portst with reduced gfx don't sell good on the wii, then you end at a point where you end up making 2 seperate games again.

But this thread starts with an objective post.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

And that thread also has some other subjective posts that people might enjoy reading.
