It´s my favorite hobby other than car racing, and it helps me forget a bit about reality.
You know, I have been wondering that for a while now. I just have this horrible creeping feeling that I am wasting my life... I play games to escape reality and avoid stress mostly. Some games I really enjoy playing such as geometry wars (I am thinking BK nuts and bolts and BK arcade will be 2 more) but a lot of games just feel like a waste now that I am learning to manage my stress effectively. I turn on oblivion and all I can think about is productive better things I could be doing.... starting to happen to this site as well. I just bought a 360 so I won't quit gaming, but may be I'll quit the site... dunno :(
edit- I also love playing gmaes with others and talking about gaming with others... though I am finding that talking about gaming isn't the best way to connect with alot of people... I suspect many people watch sports so they can connect with others? Sports are soooo boring, but its a great excuse to talk :D
I consider games like movies and books, its for entertainemnt and divertissment.
1. Artistic inspiration
2. Pure badass fun (shoot 'em ups, platformers mostly).
3. What I like to call "subconcious fun" - mostly in RPG's. Planning your tactics, handling a battle, making decisions, succeeding in tasks. That's the most satisfying.
4. Relax, of course.
Just the little mix of everything: memorable worlds, characters, soundtracks, etc. and it's all coming from various people's minds, which is pretty amazing if you ask me. I can't believe how fun it looks to create such virtual worlds and all (look at Bungie studios, when they worked on Halo 3. They seemed to have had lots of fun)!
Also, you know you can always try to challenge yourself, especially when you play hard games like pretty much all the Shoot 'Em Up games out there. There are also games that can help you understand stuff or make you try other things in life. Take my example, The Legend of Zelda series definitely helped me learn English when I was young. I always asked my brother and parents what this or that word meant, and now knowing what to do in order to clear a certain puzzle, it just linked into my head! Or also take Guitar Hero for example, it motivated me to try playing real guitar, and I'm getting quite good at it too! I'm starting to understand the whole music world more and more. It's also why I'm getting more interested in video game melodies and themes, some of them are just masterpieces!
When you think about it, people creating games have a goal, and it's to entertain in many various ways. That's why I think video gaming is the best form of art ever because it combines all of them together in a little $60 package!
Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
i was born a gamer
got a nes when i was 3yrs
Playstation(games)=pleasure like no other
video games relaxes me
me leaving gaming comes like killing myself(which is not happening)
I play some because they challenge me, others for the story, large world, characters, etc.(adventure games). Some to releive stress(Painkiller). I play the Pokemon games because I like collecting stuff and to train them to be killing machines. Some to relax. And for fun.
