Streaming HD content is still to expensive, why do you think most channels are only 720p and not 1080p, because streaming them its too expensive, i think that the optical format will die eventually but i think it has more than 10 years (not meaning that it will be bluray)

This is why MS is now banking on digitial download and teamed up with Net Flex because they know direct download is the way to go.

Well movie wise yes I agree it has awhile to go. But seven years? Supposedly steam/direct downloads of games (legally) are almost outpacing PC disc format. Disc format will probably always be a option, but renting wise people will want to go with digital distribution.



It's just that simple.

So it looks like Microsoft was correct in saying that the future is digital distribution through downloading. Looks like the next generation of consoles might not have a physical memory drive of some sort.

@Etech: My sentiment exactly. As for Blu-ray, it will last for a while for consumers and then become another UMD format with max usage for servers and businesses. DL is the future and it pays to think ahead.

Wow WORST summary ever.

The article essentially says that optical discs are at the limit with BluRay because this is as much as you can get out of a optical disc (no higher-frequency lasers available) So you will not get a UltravioletRay disc with higher datarate next gen.

And this is somehow translated into BluRay is dead?

That must be the most misleading and out-of-context summary I have ever seen.
