Forums - Nintendo - Metroid Prime 3: a radical departure into FPS territory?

ckmlb said:

That isn't the point. It says it is going the FPS way and copying FPS linear level design and repetitiveness.

Edit: Neitehr of your posts talk about the issue.

It doesn't say the controls don't work or that the visuals aren't great it says it is going FPS...

Well I haven't read the entire thread yet, but geeze, here's an idea.  If you're playing a 10-15 minute demo of a game, do you think you are going to be backtracking?  Do you think that Retro would even demo a section of the game that involves back tracking?  If you had TEN to FIFTEEN FREAKING MINTUES WITH A GAME, would you want to spend those TEN MINUTES BACKTRACKING over the SAME TERRITORY?  I think you catch my logic.  Good Day.

I find it hilarious that people are now questioning if I have a Wii because I happened to be concerned with one detail of the game complained about in one preview...

Whoever doubts that I have a Wii send me a message with your Wii codes and I will add you if you like.

Also, I am not trying to find the negative. Even if the complaint is acutally true it doesn't mean the game isn't going to be amazing, it's just one aspect of the game.

I bring up a criticism of one point and I get flamed as if I am saying the game isn't going to deliver.

Also, to the guy who said if someone said the Killzone 2 level thing, it could be that that game has horrible level design, the demo was just 15 minutes and the footage was even less. This game has actually been played for at least a full level so it's different.

If you seriously think I hate Nintendo's games or something you definitely do not know me, the reason I bought the Wii was on the promise of one game alone: Mario Galaxy. If that game delivers and it will then the console is worth it for me. You want to attack someone as a Sony fan boy attack someone else cause you are barking up the wrong tree.

Do I really need to justify that I'm not a fan boy if I bring up a legitimate point about a game in a preview from a credible source? I don't think I have to. If I come on and say Metroid is gonna be shit like a lot of people come on and say about PS3 games then you can accuse me of bias.

Not to mention when Wii fanboys come into PS3 threads to criticize some of the best looking games on consoles right now as looking 'last gen' I don't think they are in a position to make that point....

The demo was much longer than that in the preview, but it is a preview. Previews are early impressions so what do you expect the previewer to talk about except the actual level he played?

Also I don't think you're very credible on the whole unbiased thing when you came into Killzone thread and posted how the best looking PC game ever made looks better than a console game...

Given the somewhat lackluster sales of the only FPA on the market I don't see a problem with being a little more FPSish. I personally hope it is a little more straightforward this time. I loved exploring the worlds in MP but it was annoying to explore 1/4 then go on fetch quest to explore another 1/4 so you could go on another fetch quest, and so on.

You shouldn't go off of one guy's opinion though, Matt at IGN and Philip at AMN both seemed to like the level design. You especially shouldn't go off of a demo of the first level (meant to be linear so you learn the controls) and the first part of the second level. This game should be 50+ hours so I don't think there's enough time to really exploe a vast world in 30-120 min.  Whatever happens it's not a radical departure, MP Hunters was basically a straight FPS game so it's not like MP hasn't been there already.

I guess I'll throw my two cents into the raging argument this sparked. I'd say it is an entirely reasonable thread for ckmlb or anyone to start that quickly became unreasonable.

The exact amount of time the demo took is irrelevant.  People want new experiences in a demo, and retro is going to try to show as much as they can in the demo.  They aren't going to have people backtracking over the same area of the game.

What does my credability have to do with anything?  Why are you bringing this up?  I posted Crysis screenshots in the Killzone thread... so what?  I did so for a reason and made a logical point with them.  I never questioned your credability, so what does mine have anything to do with this topic?

Ckmlb... I like you.  This forum wouldn't be half as fun without your personality.  We all know that you love the PS3 and that you like creating controversy when it comes to the Wii, but that's what makes it interesting.  How boring would it be "OMG MP3 LOOKS SOO KOOOOL.  OMG DID U SEE THE CONTROLS.  OMG WOW NINTENDO IS SO GOOD MP3 wowwZERS NINTENDO REALLY DID IT THIS TIME."  I mean, I have no desire to join in a conversation like that.  But then we get a curveball from you " Hey mp3 looks great, but I hear the level design is a little too linear for that "FPA" label everyone likes to so eloquently refer to it as."  Thats what makes an interesting conversation.

Please ckmlb, if I ever respond to your posts, and I seem to get a little "excited," its only becasue the discussion is actually beginning to interest me.  Please stick around.

I was skeptical about prime 3 until 10 minutes ago when i started watching the new footage..its awsome..the dogs bollocks...fantastic..amazing and every other superlatives u can think of..I am a believer!

Is this the same 1up guy who said he hates motion control and will dock review scores for any games that use it?

Keeep uin mind that in order to experience stuff like backtracking your going to have to give at least a few hours into it. Not 3 minutes.

Umm, did anyone READ that interview with Retro - where they talked in detail about level design?

There will be PLENTY of backtracking in MP3. But it will feel less "pointless", and more directed - like an FPS. More solid objectives, reasons for going forwards, etc.

QFT

Yes, I've seen previews where it is mentioned that there will still be backtracking but that it will have more purpose.  The 1up article is strange in that it is making these contradictory statements with nothing to back it up.

I will certainly take the word of Retro over 1up, for now.
