Forums - Nintendo - Metroid Prime 3: a radical departure into FPS territory?

Here are impressions from the preview at 1up.com:

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3161104

We're definitely not sold on Corruption's new approach to level design. Sure, it could be good, but a large part of what makes Metroid Metroid is the ability to backtrack, re-explore, find alternate paths and break sequence. Corruption really does feel like Halo in a lot of ways -- not just the intro section, but even Skytown. Not in the good way, but rather in the "linear stage designs and frequent repetition of level elements" way. Did you hate Halo's Library? Well, pilgrim, you may have to grit your teeth a little when you play through Skytown.

Now granted, the first two Metroid Prime games did have their problems, but that mostly centered around the fact that players were forced to retrace their steps through the entire game in mindless fetch quests. Streamlining the game could work, but many Metroid fans may balk at the radical change that Corruption seems to represent.

The rest of the preview was positive with minor control complaints.

"The controls for Corruption are so responsive, so correct, and so intuitive, that I’ve finally been convinced that the Wii is the new home for first person adventures. I know that those are some bold words (and that games like Red Steel have left a pretty bad taste in player’s mouths), but if you play Corruption for just ten minutes, you’ll become a believer too."

Matt cassamassina from ign: (on the ign boards)

"2. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the game. Screens don't do it justice. And vids really don't, either, because it's running mostly at a beautiful 60 frames. It looks better than Prime 1 or 2. More detailed textures. Larger environments. And the bloom lighting looks good. Obviously, not on the same level as some HD titles, but for Wii I'm really impressed. It's coming together. We just played a sweet tutorial where you see Samus -- actually see her out of suit -- coasting through space in her ship. You use the Wii remote to bring up her ship's controls from inside the cockpit. It's quite cool. We'll have a vid coming your way in about 40 mins.

Oh, and if you're worried about the controls, don't be. They are near perfect. Here's the headline and subhead for my upcoming hands-on:

"E3 2007: Hands-on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

It plays better than any first-person console game ever…really. And it's one of Wii's best lookers, too." "

That isn't the point. It says it is going the FPS way and copying FPS linear level design and repetitiveness.

Edit: Neitehr of your posts talk about the issue.

It doesn't say the controls don't work or that the visuals aren't great it says it is going FPS...

Leave it to a Sony boy to post the most negative Nintendo related articles. I got a few others which give Nintendo a thorough tongue lashing, but did I post them? No because they are biased and more often than not have no clue what they are talking about. Nintendo has consistently delivered games which the mainstream gaming media have flunked out in ratings and whatever else they do with it. Stick to screen shots and trailers please.

Only problem is the destructoid link doesn't talk about actual level design but instead just about the controls so I don't see how that counters what the reservations that the person from 1up who tried is has.

The guy saw one level and complained that the level design has been completely changed?

I don't know why they even bothered to change the formula, and this is no bash against Nintendo but usually when they find something that works they don't bother to change it much and the same could be said about Bungie and their Halo series, why try to fix what wasn't broken?

There were a good share of complains after metroid prime 2.
