Forums - Gaming - Disaster: DOC vs The Conduit - No Hype vs Hype

Seeing the threads made for Disaster Day of Crisis being so close to release and we know nothing about it, along with threads on the Conduit and how it is overhyped, made me want to make a thread about:

Which is better, too little hype or too much hype? What is the "right" level of hype/info that should be unveiled on games before their release?

As this is a sales site, there is of course a sales side to this question. Hype --> Bigger 1st week sales. No Hype --> hoping for good word of mouth and thus, legs.

But are there other aspects (cult following for smaller "obscure" games, back lash on over hyped games like GTA4 is getting now or Halo series, etc...)? Is Nintendo trying something here with Disaster and a surprise release much earlier than anticipated (since its delay)? I personally am a fan of little hype and just scratching around for any minor detail you can find.

Oddly enough, I am way more tempted by Disaster then by Conduit. Maybe Nintendo is on to something.

Don't know where I am going with this but maybe someone here will have enlightening thoughts on the subject?

Too much hype is always bad. Especially when the game doesnt look that special in the first place (hello Haze)

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

I pretty much agree with you, although big hype can be good as well. I know I tuned in for the Smash Bros. Dojo every single weekday. Personally, I'd rather see a good game being underhyped, because you'd still have lots of fun with the game, than a game getting overhyped and then underdelivering.

Overdelivering > Underdelivering. In general, I don't think that new IPs should get too much hype or it might not end so well. Wasn't that what happened with the first Fable? I mean, a lot of people agree that it's a stellar game but it also gets a lot of crap for promises that weren't fulfilled.

Now, if a Zelda or GTA gets hyped, then that's a different story, because they are already big IPs and people know what to expect. Or rather, should know what to expect. I think most complaints about GTA are because people didn't seem to expect another GTA but something completely different. Most complaints I hear about GTA is that it's too similar to the other ones and doesn't innovate, but I wasn't expecting it to innovate or be different so I was more than pleased with it.

Well, those are my two cents anyway.

Majin - agreed, its like with anything in life, if you get your hopes up, you increase the chance of being dissapointed whereas if you have no or little expectations, no disappointment no matter the quality of the end product...

However, this doesn't tackle the sales issue and that a game with hype (videos, pics, articles, advertising) such as COnduit, definitely increases its chances of outselling a game like Disaster which has had nothing up until now (though by reading threads, you feel a lot of hope for this game).

Personally I'm very interested in Disaster : Day of Crisis because of it's gameplay setup. I'm mildly interested in Conduit, but I have yet to see any gameplay to make it feel different than any other fps I've ever played.

More hype is better, at least you know what you're buying.

Fullfilled Prophecies

My thought is to hype the crap out of a game a month before it comes out, and only release a little news every 3-4 months about the game. So a gentle reminder early on, and right before the game comes out, hit em hard and then drop the game on them. A month out gives people time to put aside money to make a first day purchase. Just my thoughts, of course =)

Hype is totally different to advertising. Hype is sequel speculation, gossip and every single little detail months in advance.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I like a little info well in advance but don't hype it up until about 2 months before release

I dont like over hype but I do like little hype, so I know a good game is coming. With Disaster DoC, I dont know what to think because we know nothing. I just hope they are not saying anything because its a pile of crap and just trying to quietly sneak it out the door.
