Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Movie studio's producing Videogames become a big thing?

I noticed that Touchstone did Turok when I played the demo earlier today and I said WTF?

I know that Universal tried digging it's hand in the cookie jar before with their partnership with FOX studios (I don't think that ended well).

At any rate, do you see this as just a one time thing, or wil this start to happen more and more.  Disney now has "Disney Interactive studios" and have/are making games.  Will we see Mirimax games and Lakeshore games as well?  Where will it end?

They've had Disney Interactive for at least 15 years, but I see where you're going. Really, I don't see why they wouldn't. I mean, does this not seem like a natural list of extras for a movie studio to have:

-Movies
-Toy line
-Books
-Game studio

It's really inevitable, as the game industry now makes more money yearly than the film industry.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Its going to get worse. On the plus side if Newscorp owns the video game companies that makes the games the newspapers that complain about violence probably won't complain about titles published by its owner.

Yes its corrupt but thats the reality.

Im just worried about the PG effect in films and whether that will cross over.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I wonder why SCE or SOE doesn't make the games for all or most of Sony Pictures movies.

Its already a pretty big deal.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Also LucasArts exists.

I don't know whether it will be big profits for the studios, but atleast with most propability, it will become a bigger trend in the future. Simultanous developement and release with the movies. Even now, we have games coming, based on future movies and they will be out at the same timeframe, it's only a matter of time before the movie studios start thinking "outside the license".

Because if they pay someone else to make the game, then they get more money because of a multiplatform release

Actually they wouldn't pay anybody, 3rd parties would pay them to be able to make the games based on their movies.

Naw, they will try to get into it, but the current Mega Publishers (EA and Activision with THQ running in back) are big enough now that the Movie studios shouldnt be able to move in and take over. More than likely they will make a few games each, watch them all bomb horribley, like Turok, and then realize they are better of sourcing it out to the professional game makers.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

If there is money to be made in it....
