Forums - Microsoft - Tales of Vesperia - RPG GOTY Candidate?

where are you guys finding this game? I'm starting to get PO'd.

Around the Network

I have been playing RPG since the day of Ultima 2 (Yes , I am that old). I play Phantasy Star on Sega but miss most of the JRPG during PSone day (I was mainly PC gamers then , the Amiga), but I did play a lot of RPG on Amiga and later PC. (Wizardry, all of the D&D series by SSI and all of Black Isle games - Buldur Gate etc).

So I have been RPG-ing for quite awhile.

I preordered off ebay. The seller told me that he didn't get any copies. So I got a refund and had to go to 3 gamespots before I could find a copy(They had 2 special editions and no regular copies). I bought a special edition and their last startegy guide.

...and people wonder why this game didn't have impressive sales. Wal-Mart doesn't even carry this SOB. I got pissed off too, lol.

I suggest ordering it from Amazon or something, cause you can't be sure if you can find this one in stores. It's destined to have a low printing number, I think.

This one is gonna end up as the definition of "cult classic." It took 2.5 weeks post release for like 17 reviews to surface for this game. Halo 3 has about 96 reviews, and I bet half of them were out before the game released.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Eh, so far I disgaree. Im past Keiv Moc at about 10 hours (not sure why it took you 15) and Im a slow player.

It has a very good story with a fun battle systems. I do have some issues with it though. (Of course they are all personal.)

1. Characters Animations, or rather the non animation. It the real time cutscenes the characters feel like robots (Yuri's "chop to the neck" at Ehmead Hill.)

2. I feel like the story is kinda dragging along. They are starting to do things that are completely unrelated to what they started out to do.

3. In the cutscenes, there is no progressive speach. You have to press a button to continue the conversation. I think it would be cooler and more immersive it flowed seamlessly like the VA does in skits.

4. Karol (there is always a character you want throw off a cliff, he is mine)

I do really like:

1. Plenty of VA. I love not having to read and press "A".
2. The new artes and the evolving battle system. I love the fact that I am still figuring out new things. (Burst Artes, two level over limits, etc.)
3. Yuri. He's awesome. Not much a sterotype. He reminds me of Kaim and Auron with more personality.

That said, I really do like this game. I still LO is a better game, but ToV is giving it a run for its money.

P.S. To further elaborate on point 2. I feel like they are tacking on things to artifically make the game longer. That is all.

Not trying to marginalize your opinion at all, but I will say the game gets better the further you get into it. Excellent pacing is one of the things reviewers universally agreed on, so just remember you're basically still at the beginning. The story doesn't really start till 15 or so hours in. Right now you're at the character development stage, like in an anime. You're in the first season of Bleach. The combat and art unlocking get really deep soon, with altered arts.

Also, Karol really does become a good character later in the game, imo. I'll have to wait and get your opinion on that(I felt the same way after meeting him at the beginning).

That said, personally, I wasn't as in to LO as others were so it very much could just be me not liking that game that makes me feel this one is so much superior.

My full review of Vesperia is still a ways off, as I'm only about 30 hours in.

Im 15 hours in now. Just finished up in Nordopolica. It is getting better, but everything I've has been more going to do random whims that have NOTHING to do with the main quest. This has become my main gripe about the game.

And Karol does become more likeable after Brave Vesperia. (although, Rita is taking no time filling in his place).

Side Note: Boy is this soundtrack good! Im looking for it reasonably priced online.

Halo 3 sold more in one day than what a Tales game will ever sell in its lifetime

Your point? ToV is still a better game than Galo 3.

I got mine at my local Gamestop...Last copy they had.

Give 'em time to restock the game - This ends up being quasi-good as they may be realizing that Tales of Vesperia needs massive amounts of re-orders. Lets hope that VGC shows that it had a strong hold on Week #2.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Yes, so reviewers should give games special treatment because of sales, and shun unpopular games. I understand the argument. I just think it's bullshit.

There is no fair scale to point to how much better, so I'll stick with, "I like ToV single player campaign a trillion times more than Halo 3's campaign, which sucked, imo."

In XB360 JRPG threads, I always have this feeling that most people never played a JRPG in their life, and hype the games like they just discovered that JRPG wasn't as bad as everyone told them, which they never checked by themselves.
It was worse for Eternal Sonata though, I remember when I said players was saying it wasn't that good, and that only people new to JRPG could overhyper such a game. I see people have become reasonable. But the evidence that reviews are flawed are still there, as ES is as well rated as ToV.

Now that I've seen reviews of ToV, I'm not as hyped as before for this one. It looks like a typical good Tales Of, nothing exceptional as I thought before.
I thought it was anime-like in presentation, the characters moving like in an anime, but it's not the case at all when you look at the video reviews. Everything else is your typical Team Symphonia fare.

Yet despite that, it's still the best Tales game ever made, and arguably the best currently available for any console at the moment.

Look through the post, ookaze, and tell me who is giving high praise for it:

Badgenome 30+ RPGs owned RPG Gamer for 10+ Years
ZenfolderVGI Don't know?
Shadowblind 5+ RPGs owned RPG Gamer for 5+ Years
MysticD 3+ RPGs owned RPG Gamer for 1+ Years
Mrstickball 50+ RPGs owned RPG Gamer for 17 Years

So I think that there are a few valid RPG-ers that are promoting ToV, and have the experience to judge the game against others that they've played. In my case, I am attempting to compare Tales of Vesperia to the 150+ RPG's I've played.

You didn't mention me! T_T

BTW My snes and playstation library was gone....so my list is incomplete.
