Forums - Sales - Sony and Microsoft can't compete with Nintendo -- on price

@Sullla: As far as i know, Saturn and Dreamcast were both sold at profit. Saturn was a hugely expensive console when it came out (although, it dropped in price very quickly) and the reason why Dreamcast made loss, was because when DC was discontinued, Sega had as much Dreamcasts in the warehouse as they had sold them, and therefore couldn't afford to continue production (too much money already invested in the warehouse). Combine that with expensive game developement (atleast in comparision to the installbase) and "bankrupcy" is ready.

@Celine: As i've understood, the Playstation was sold at profit from the start. Didn't it have a early pricecut too, like Saturn did?

I think this thread is just stating the obvious

I agree.  Also bear in mind that Gamecube at $99 was being sold at a profit.  Wii has already sold more than gamecube so the manufacturing costs must have come down significantly due to economies of scale and Wii hardware is not that significantly different from Gamecube albeit more powerful.  I wouldn't be suprised if they would still be making a profit on the hardware if the price were dropped to $150.

well we have seen how much that have helped...

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

If this discussion is purely focusing on this current generation of consoles, then you're right. It hasn't done much for Sony and Microsoft however..

Well the Competed in that Area last generation and it did not work, with GC being more powerfull than PS2. If Ninty released an HD console they would end up 3rd. But this gen proves that XBOX 1 graphics were satysfying for most of the public, and to sell everything does not have to be bigger.

Nintendo isn't selling well because of price, it is because they have a new experience for gamers and non-gamers to embrace. Although Nintendo could easily drop their price and still make a profit, they have no need to do so.

BS, If you think price has nothing to do with it then you are absurd. For most price is ALWAYS a consideration, don't be naive...

OT: No neither sony or ms will be able to compete with N on price... but didn't we all know this? Just like a Ferrari can't compete in price with a Miata...

I've said this countless times, but than again most of them don't know how it is to pay bills and etc...

Their counter argument always come to the 360, or the Gamecube.

Of course price matters but that's not the only reason as to why the Wii is selling. People don't have $250 to throw away any time they want. They buy it for games. It's just more people saw more value in the PS2 than the GC, and people now see more value in the Wii over the HD consoles.

You changed your mind fast...I've seen many that say price has nothing to do with it. In real life, these kind of people fall under the category of ludicrous. To add on, thats just the starting price for the HD consoles, as you have to take into account that the games are more expensive and they also use more energy.HD consoles bring in bigger bills than Wii. An argument against this is just futile.

Perhaps this has already been said, (haven't read past here) but you don't understand what JaggedSac means.

Price is a factor in buying a games console in the first place because price is a factor in anything we buy..... but once you have decided "I'm going to buy a games console" the price of the Wii doesn't come into it.... people will either buy a Wii, or not buy a Wii (instead buying PS3 or 360) they decided which of the 2 paths to go and as Wii has no similar competition the price doesn't matter.

This was the same last generation... when people decided to buy a console, they might have been poor and only just able to afford a PS2, but that didn't make them buy a cheaper GameCube instead, they just went and bought a PS2 anyway. Of course there are exceptions, like if unknowing parents go to buy a console for you, they might simply buy the cheapest anyway... or whichever is the most well known anyway.

JaggedSac isn't even a word...Why should I know the meaning of something that is inexisten?

I'm I against this? I just added to what I said. I never said it as if it were the case everytime.
