I finally ended up getting Warhawk yestreday.  Should I buy the expension packs or should I just play without expensions at first.  So far I've only completed some of the training missions and I played a few games.  Also which game types are the most exciting and what should i play at first.

Personally, zones is my favorite mode. It feels the most war like. You have to capture bases and every few seconds your team gets points depending on how many bases are in your possession. I play zones far more than any other mode. But lately I've been getting into Collection, which is a more agressive capture the flag style game. there are 4 icons scattered around the map and each team has to bring them back to base A player can hold all four Icons at once. If you bring back 1 icon you get 1 point, 2 icons=3 points and if you have all four your team gets 10 points. Team work is REALLY necessary for this mode.

Buying the pack will open more official servers, personally I would or you will be limited in the number of official servers you can join for ranked games..

Zones is good, though I would recommend just playing the normal game before getting the expansions

Wait until you try the game a little before spend 16$ on the map packs. They are great, but make sure you're not one of those people who just can't get into Warhawk for some reason.

I find Collection and Capture the flag to be the most exciting modes. The other modes are more dependent on who you are playing with/against in order to be exciting.

Try the VGChartz WARHAWK bi-weekly league. We play Saturdays at 4 pm eastern. Show up before 5:20PM if you don't have the maps. We have a very good/enjoyable mix of maps and modes that work for us.

And this thread would have been more succesful in the Sony forum, since it would have reached your target audiance (Warhawkers) better/faster.

warning:They will kick your ass harder than most. I do alright out in the wild, but once I get in a league game I just shove a white flag up my ass and wander around.

I'd get the packs right away if trophies are your agenda. I have been playing this game like crazy since the new patch, and DLC. I had not touched it since 10/17/2008, and I only had 6 hours of play. Now I have 37 hours in the last few days. Not playing it the whole time has really done wonders for this games. They have basically tripled the size of the game in every aspect.

careful collecting trophies cos the majority of them look easy when u have to unlock them, but in the end u get someone killing u when ur doing or about to do it.
on the other hand try doing zones capture the flag and tdm, they are the best and can earn u alot of in game points.

I recomend buying all packs since they open more servers for you to play = more experience to gain :).

The warhawk was pretty damn hard to control at start, but now its like a piece of cake. A cake made of awesome.
