Individual experience hardly dictates average/overall rate of failure. You have to look at the numbers being reported by organizations that track failure rates of consumer electronics.

While I know there were plenty of disc read errors with the PS2, and consumers who went through multiple consoles, I bought one in January 2001 and it never once failed, in any way at all. Zero freezes, errors, etc. So naturally my assumption would be that they were all top quality unless I read about the consumer reports.

No hardware problems with the initial run 60GB PS3 either with well over 5,000 hours of run time including a six month period (4320 hours) during which it ran 24/7 without any downtime, either playing movies and games or Folding when not in use. That's bulletproof. Not every PS3 has faired as well, but the rate of failure has been well under the generally accepted 3-5% rate of failure for typical consumer electronics (which is higher for computers).

Zero red lights with the Xbox 360 I bought last Fall. Barring some software freezes with Orange Box, there have been no problems. This does not invalidate the millions of broken consoles that have been reported, repaired and replaced.

The estimated rate of failure for the Falcon was pegged at 16%. Less than half the rate of failure of the Xenon, which was initially estimated to be as high as 33%, although the general assertion is that the majority of those original models will eventually fail, assuming regular extended use.

everyone keeps talking about the RROD like no other console has had anything like this before, may I take time out to remind everyone about the PS2. I went through 3 of those!!! Being a somewhat favorable towards Sony it never stopped me buying another one as angry as I got at Sony. MS has now made the same mistake and big deal if they have.

 The Disc Read Errors?

What I love about them is that they were easy to fix yourself. Take the thing apart, clean the drive's lens, put it back together, works again. The thing was built like a tank!

And looooooads of people paid Sony £60 to do it for them.

Yet fixing stuff for free has somehow become a major issue this generation.

Just got the red rings on a 6 month old 175w premium unit. :saddowns: Going to try the towel trick to get it working while they send the coffin.

edit: they don't send a box out anymore, and it takes 48 hours for shipping labels to show up??

My 3 month old Elite just puked today after having bought it to replace a chronic disc read erroring launch premium. So I called MS to get the elite sent in for repairs.

I pulled the hard drive out and put it into the old premium so I could at least enjoy some gaming, if not with constant disc read errors.

However, it seems in the elite's last gasp of breath, it decided to corrupt hundreds of hours of game saves. Is there any chance in hell of recovering the saves? I would give MS a call, but Im sure they wont give one fuck about all the data I just lost.

I had to send my system away, and so far all I have to say is that Microsoft is fucking inept and disorganized. I literally have two tracking numbers, one from Purolator and one from UPS...I only sent out one box.

Beyond that, I had the worst phone customer service I've had in years, resulting in a full hour long wait on the phone, where I never actually got any information from the guy I talked to, nor his supervisor, who I had to demand 4 times to talk to. The guy wouldnt transfer me?!

Blah, my brother's Elite just seem to blank out on us -- literally. The system doesn't display any video nor sound when you boot it up. All this after when we bought Too Human too. Luckily it's still under warranty and I was able to give that number posted in the op a call (thank god for agent). The phone call seemed pretty quick and easy. Now I have to wait for their email and ship it out via UPS tomorrow. The guy said it'll take 3-4 weeks, but I hope I get those turn around numbers that you guys previously posted.

I also asked about extending the warranty. He said after I received the system back I get a free 90 warranty extension. And if I still want to extend it, it would cost me $29.99 for 1 year or $59.99 for 2. Apparently you can keep extending it as long as you are still under warranty (outside of the whole RROD ordeal).

1st Elite lasted from the initial Elite launch up until the Halo 3 release.
2nd Elite lasted from the initial Halo launch up until the Too Human release.
3rd Elite soon to come. Hopefully it'll push more than a year this time around.

Never thought I'd be posting in this thread! Just bought a new 60 gig 360 today. The fan was making a horrible seizing noise right out of the box! Luckily I was able to return it and get a second one but wow. I never thought it would happen to me. It was kind of hilarious but at the same time sad because I had to drive to Futureshop again.

These are just posts that stated they were from Falcon or newer units, and just the posts from August 28-August 31st. So the problem is still huge with Falcon unit models and it would be stupid to assume it is not a problem with the newest models either until we go six months without seeing a very high rate of failures as we've been observing with the falcons.

Bottomline is, no electronic device is 100% immune to hardware issues, no matter how perfectly built the blueprint may suggest. So to say that the new 360's have absolutely ZERO chance of RRoD is a very naive statement IMO, especially for a product that's mass produced. There's bound to be some units that were not built properly on the production line. It happens with every product, the 360 is no different.

After hearing all the fanboys talk about the 360 hardware,i`ve understood that they don`t know what`s inside of the 360,don`t know what is the RRoD and just like to talk about the 30-33% failure rate of the early consoles.

First of all,the RRoD happens when the GPU,from the heat, doesn`t stay on the motherboard and you get the RRoD. Very simple. In september 2007 Microsoft shrunk the CPU from 90 nm to 65 nm AND the GPU from 90 nm to 80 nm. This time,ATI,the company that made the GPU,was asked to make a special glue (epoxy resin) that keeps the GPU in place.

This was supposed to be done in the first place, but Microsoft went straight to TSMC (Taiwan semi-micro conducter Co.) and thanked ATI for it`s chip, but said it`s all good for now on,they don`t need ATI anymore. Why? Because the process would cost Microsoft some 50 million $ . They are a software company, not a hardware one. Now it`s a little too late, but is good that they have changed and realised that they have lost 1 billion $ on the RRoD problem.

Moving along to the 60 gb model, the difference with the Falcon is that the memory chips on the FRONT of the motherbord have doubled in sise,so there was no need for the bottom ram chips. This is great because of the ventilation and power usage. Also, the cooling is the same as the Falcon, wich is great.

In september 2008,the Jasper model will have the GPU shrunk from 80 nm to 65 nm,wich from what i know, has a lot less power consumption and heat. So if you are interested in a 360 this Xmass,go for it. Now is the time.

And i hope i have been very explicit.

So wait because you say these hardware revisions stop RRoD, people are supposed to believe you? Sorry anyone who actually believes this is pretty stupid. Lets wait until we get hands on confirmation of this. Not saying it will definitely be true, but just because some random guy with 75 post who no one knows anything about says theres RRoD, doesn't make it true.

I don't know what model it is exactly, but units that have been bought as recently as June have gotten RRoD.
