Forums - Gaming - Microsoft is not cut out to make hardware

The original XBox was very reliable, more so than the PS2.  Microsoft is learning, first they made a high powered, almost indestructiable machine then they trimmed costs and made a cheaper system that is prone to malfunction.

They are learning the ropes.

This thread reeks of fanboyism.

Microsoft will be part of the next generation, and they are making money on the Xbox360 brand now.

MS lost 200$ million last quarter and Sony made profit of $50 million. Xbox360 brand is far from making any money with coming price cut.

How did Sony make a profit when they were minus 2 billion dollars coming into this fiscal year--far bigger losses than any other gaming company, MS included. There's no way they made $2,050,000,000 in just the last few months. I won't deny that they "made $50,000,000;" but I can't believe that they've miracuously overturned the money they lost the first year the PS3 was out.

maybe they should buy sega out and then get sega to be their console making bit while MS concentrates on software

I doubt things would actually play out that way, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft contract with another company to produce "second-party hardware." The resulting successor console would still be sold as a Microsoft product, though it would be produced and built (probably to Microsoft's specifications) by this second party.

The thing to keep in mind is that Microsoft got into this market for one specific purpose: to extend the Windows monopoly to set-top boxes via gaming, both from a user perspective (get them playing Microsoft games) and from a developer perspective (lock them into DirectX). Neither of these actually requires Microsoft to build the physical machine, as long as they write the underlying software and license the games themselves. From a business perspective, it makes more sense for them to partner with a company that has more experience with hardware to work on that aspect.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Quite incredible. This thead, first 3 posts were from 2 rampant PS3 fanboys and 1 PS3 supporter....

And yet all their posts are actually neutral and thought out. (Bet you thought I was going to flame them)

I don't think MS will leave the game, they cut a bigger slice out of the market this time around (so a win for them) and they are making money (or would be if you take out RROD, since I don't know the financial figures I'm not sure which is which) on this venture, so it goes towards them learning from their mistakes next gen.

LMAO!!

But i agree MS must fix the rrod problem and tell consumers they haved fixed the problem, there is no point in cutting prices if the rrod is still present. If microsoft manages to fix the hardware problem, they can really become a force in europe and japan. But people there are less tolerant to the rrod then people in America. they have great games, great online but console is questionable!

woooooow.. you said something positive about 360!!! we are making progress!!

the next one is sheuk... lol..
